Here’s a funny story…
This picture is from 2015.
I had this little billboard on the corner of Whittier Blvd and the 605North exit. It’s a little small and doesn’t light up so it costs a little less than most billboards.
I had it for only one year because the dentist whose office was in the same shopping center as the billboard swooped in and signed a contract for it before I even knew it was time for a renewal.
Every year since then, I reach out to the billboard company to see if the billboard is available yet. I know it renews in October. Every year the same answer. “No, the dentist renewed for another year.”
This year a funny thing happened. The dentist was moving. Now his was going to be right across the street from me. Instead of coming to introduce himself to the block, he came into the store and offered my people a job.
Like what the f bitch? Of course moving your office down Whittier Blvd will be better for you than being next to the freeway #iykyk
But you ain’t gonna come into my business and poach my people.
His visit to my shop reminded me it was about time to email about that billboard again. This time I hoped that the dentist would think giving up the sign because of his move would be the right thing to do.
BINGO! This time the sign is available. Trust. Contract is already signed.
You might be thinking, why does the dentist still need this billboard if he’s moving?
Let me tell you. I learned from moving my store from just one corner to another how important it is to have a way to let customers know where I moved to. The dentist could have done this easily with the billboard, even if he just kept it for one more year. But business lessons are expensive and whether I’m right or wrong, he’ll be seeing my billboard every time he drives by instead of his.

I had to laugh. He had said it so low and so quiet. Fam, kindness doesn’t have to be some grand gesture. But if you stay ready to help your fellow human being, events that fit your way of helping will regularly fall in your lap.
Just like this one did for me.

I love seeing stuff like this because there are so many life lessons in this one picture.
Jordan, since 1984 was good for 30 points a game. From 1991-98 he won 6 championships and even as a Wizard was without a doubt the fiercest and most competitive player on the court every night. Believe me, when Jordan and the Bulls were on TV, you were watching. The man was exciting to watch.
Kobe came into the NBA almost 10 years later in 1996. And from 1999 to 2010 Kobe and the lakers earned 5 rings of their own.
Both were first in, last out kind of guys. Both demanded everything from themself as well as everyone around them. With their broken fingers, their sick games, and their “no excuses” attitudes they became champions not only in the NBA but also in business and in life.
Work hard. Own your mistakes. Respect others. Reap the benefits.
