After more than a decade of producing Mac’s Mud, the time has come for us to pass the baton. This decision hasn’t come lightly, but it does come from a place of clarity, care, and love for the clay community we’ve been so proud to serve. Many of you know that Dylan has been quietly managing a spinal condition for some time now. While we’ve kept things running as best we could, it’s become clear that stepping back from clay production is the right move for his health and our family’s future. We’re deeply grateful to every one of you, customers big and small, who’ve supported Mac’s over the years. You’ve stuck with us through the busy times, the supply shortages, the muddy miracles, and the magic ✨ Your support has made it all worthwhile. As we transition, we’re thrilled to share that Mac’s is heading back to its roots; Nelson - where it first began. The new owners are Tyler and Hayley of @pottersclaynelson , and we couldn’t be more confident in their ability to take Mac’s into the future. Not only are they well set up to meet the increasing demand for high-quality, New Zealand-made clay, they also care deeply about continuing the legacy of Mac’s. Production will be moving to Nelson in the coming months, and Dylan is working closely with the team to support a smooth handover. Classic White and Studio White will remain unchanged. The other clay bodies will undergo a slight reformulation due to the depletion of certain raw materials, but this process is already underway with consistency and quality being of foremost importance. If you already have an order on our waitlist, we’ll still be fulfilling those in the coming months. For any new orders, you can connect directly with Potter’s Clay Nelson on [email protected], they are ready to carry the torch! Change always comes with a mix of emotions, but we’re ending this chapter with hearts full of gratitude and optimism. Thank you for being part of our story. It’s been an honour to create with you. Dylan and Sonja

We’ve heard some interesting stories come out the rumour (pug)mill over the last couple of weeks so we thought we’d better clear a few things up! Firstly – no we have not stopped making clay 😊 Neither are we taking a holiday (though much needed!) We have been struggling with demand far-outweighing our capacity to supply for some time. In light of this we looked at importing some really great Australian clays to help with demand, which saw the launch of @clay.down.under mid 2024, where we now also retail clay from @walkerceramicsaust & the lovely team @pottersclaynelson The supplementary clays have alleviated some of the pressure, but we are still experiencing demand for Mac’s far greater than what we can fulfil. While this is all a wonderful problem to have, and one that is not lost on us, in an economy that is otherwise struggling, we also have to be practical about what we can commit to customers. Currently we are working through back orders that will take us to mid-May to complete. It is therefore not fair to anyone, to take new bulk orders, that are months away from being dispatched. For this reason, we have closed our books to new orders, while we work (almost!) round the clock to catch up, and get to a place that we can offer a realistic turnaround time for new orders. While we fulfil back orders, we do our best to pinch a few surplus bags of clay for retail sale via our websites, and we always endeavour to keep the website updated with a realistic ETA – where you can pre-order and have your clay dispatched the moment it comes out the pugmill! The online store does impose quantity limits, so you cannot process bulk orders via the website We appreciate this is difficult for our customers – it keeps us awake many nights! But we can assure you all we are doing our utmost to produce clay as fast as we can, pushing our equipment (and our clay maker) to their limits. Which brings us to the next rumour to be addressed >>>

Part 2 Yes, Dylan our master clay maker is battling with a ruptured disk. But no, this is not in any way affecting production and output. We have implemented some changes in the factory layout, and we make very good use of our staff and our new forklift to lift all materials and pallets to a height that means no awkward bending and twisting. Dylan is working closely with his Doctor and Physical Therapist, with full clearance to continue working and is managing just fine with the adaptations in place. Please be patient with us and please, get in touch if you have questions or concerns. We have always taken pride in being NZ Owned and Operated and right here on the other end of the phone when you need us! We work hard to offer a level of customer service that stands out from others, so get in touch if you have questions. We are happy to assist with looking at alternatives from our NZ and AU range, if the clay you need is not available. We are here to help! Thank you for your understanding 🩷 Mac’s Mud Team

Can we all agree this NZ speckled clay is quite possibly one of the most gorgeous clay bodies? 🇳🇿 this is my favourite clay to use in a gas reduction firing (limited oxygen in the kiln), which I’m fortunate to have access to for high temperature glaze firing 🇳🇿 the stunning speckles you can see showing through are the iron in the clay 🇳🇿 Clay is from @macs.mud 🫶 Gas kiln @aucklandstudiopotters #highfired #reductionfiring #shino #nzclay #macsmud #ceramicmug #coffeecups #nzpottery #cafelovers #interiordesignstudio #foodstylists #functionalceramics #teresamareeclay #bespokeceramics #everydayluxury #luxehome #youngfamilies #stylishliving

Our very lucky office manager (Sarah) got to spend some time at @drivingcreekpottery over the weekend with her family. She came back to work so impressed with all there was to see there, learning about the fascinating history of the railway, and also to have found some Mac's Mud on the shelf! Sadly, she didn't get to meet anyone this trip, but don't worry because she's already planning her next trip back!
