Two thirds. That’s how much of the cost to make and ship a typical body lotion is petroleum-derived. From the formula to the bottle to the shipping. We broke it all down in our latest post. Link in bio 🌊

For thirty years, “natural” meant compromise in cosmetic formulation. Part 4 of our polymer series maps the full natural alternatives landscape: what works, what doesn’t, and why a new class of seaweed-derived materials is crossing a performance threshold that natural polymers have never reached.

The paraben panic. The sulfate scare. Both time consumer perception moved faster than the science. Microplastics might be the biggest one yet, except this time regulators are moving too. Our new blog post breaks down what the research actually says, what’s still unknown, and why brand leaders should be paying attention. In 2023, the EU passed a new regulation which restricted the use of “synthetic polymer microparticles” in beauty. This complex and comprehensive set of rules, effectively means that carbomers - and many other polymer workhorses in the beauty world - are banned from 2027 onwards.
If last week was a love letter to carbomers, then this week we’re diving deep into the EU rules to explain how the restrictions will impact your polymer of choice.
Bottom line, if it doesn’t pass one of the four exemption pathways - natural, soluble, biodegradable or inorganic - then it’s going to be banned from 2027 onwards.

When you see seaweed on the beach, do you just see ugly, stinky blobs that litter the sand?
Matthew Perkins, our speaker for November's "Sacramento Science on Tap" (happening Tuesday, Nov. 4, 6:30 pm at @newhelvetiabrew ) wants to change your view of seaweed and make you fall in love with it.
Perkins is founder of @macro_oceans , a pioneering startup in West Sacramento that extracts valuable compounds from seaweed and turns them into eco-friendly chemicals for customers in the cosmetics, materials and food sectors. Macro Oceans launched its first product last year, a biodegradable ingredient that can be used in skin care.
Besides playing a critical role in keeping oceans healthy and capturing carbon, seaweed is now seen as a sustainable element in a range of items from fertilizer and animal feed to cosmetics and bioplastics.
Now Perkins has plans to create kelp farms in the Gulf of Alaska that can grow hundreds of thousands of pounds of seaweed to use in more eco-friendly products.
Join us at this Tuesday's Sac Science on Tap talk to learn from Perkins about all things seaweed and how it can improve things around the world.
Bring your questions — nothing is too dumb or too small to ask.

The team is feeling kelptastic after we enjoyed taking some time to learn more about each other, have some fun, and celebrate our accomplishments! #seaweed #kelp #TEAM #bigkelpenergy
At Fat and the Moon, we like to know exactly where our ingredients come from. So when we found Macro Oceans, a team turning regenerative Alaskan kelp into one of the most effective skincare bioactives we’ve ever seen, we knew we had to work their kelp into our formulations.
This week we toured their Sacramento facility firsthand, and it only deepened our love for them as a partner.
Dive into the full backstory and BTS on our latest blog, and give @macro_oceans a follow to keep up with their latest innovations!
