Iain MacRae’s @macraeart work begins with the land, mixing sand into his paint to create textured, concrete-like surfaces on raw canvas, a direct commentary on Caribbean development.

I am honored to announce that I have been named the Emerging Artist Award recipient this year by the National Gallery of the Cayman Islands. This recognition has been a long-held aspiration of mine since my first acceptance into the Gallery’s inaugural Biennial Exhibition. Many past recipients are artists I have long admired and continue to look up to, making this award especially meaningful.
The body of work I presented for this exhibition is among the pieces I am most proud of to date. These works explore themes of rapid overdevelopment and the resulting pressures placed on our community and natural environment.
I would like to sincerely thank the Hon. Isaac Rankine, Minister for Youth, Sports, Culture and Heritage, and Mrs. Julie Hunter, Parliamentary Secretary, for presenting this award and for their continued support of Caymanian art and culture. I am deeply grateful to the team at the National Gallery of the Cayman Islands for their ongoing support of my work and for their dedication to promoting and educating both emerging and established local artists.
My sincere appreciation also extends to the jurors—Dr. Carl A. Brown, Kerri-Anne Chisholm, Davin K. Ebanks, Dr. Veerle Poupeye, and Dr. Joseph L. Underwood—for recognizing my work and providing the opportunity to share it with my country and its people. Finally, I would like to thank my family and friends for their constant encouragement and for pushing me to grow every day.
Price just went up😈

“The Cayman Islands” is a three-piece series that explores the flora, fauna, and biodiversity unique to the Cayman Islands. Each canvas represents one of the islands in our archipelago, capturing the essence of its natural environment. Painted on unprimed canvas, the works are intentionally designed to deteriorate over time as the materials react—a deliberate choice symbolizing the gradual degradation of the natural world, particularly in Grand Cayman, amidst the growing pressures of development and expansion
On display now @natgalcayman until February 18th, these works are a part of “Archipelago”, The 4th Cayman Islands Biennial.
