my grandpa was the best man i have and will ever meet. the only brother to five wonderful sisters, husband of nearly 53 years, father of three and a grandpa to six grandchildren as well as having many nieces and nephews. he was king of the dad jokes. no matter if i heard them once or twenty five times, i’d always smile and listen along. he’d tell you to “stop him if you heard this one” but we never did because that’s what made his evening. he was thankful. whether it were a birthday card or big gift, he would treasure every item. papa quite literally talked about the carhartt jacket I bought him for christmas one year for three months straight and showed off his, “cool, new jacket” to everyone who asked (or didn’t). he was intelligent. he may have only just learned to text within the last couple of years but boy does he know some facts! in grade school, he would help me with my math worksheets since that was NEVER my strong suit. my grandma, nonni, would always say, “jennings, she doesn’t understand it, be nice!” i quickly figured out that i would not be a mathematician. he was extremely supportive. he never missed a basketball game or voice recital, graduation or performance of any sort—alongside nonni. although, he’d often choose the bleacher or two in front of her since she’d talk shit about the other players. he took me to every daddy daughter dance from 5th to 8th grade and would wait ALL night for the oldies to play (if the jive was on, he was on the floor). he was a little sneaky! he would pick me up from aftercare during grade school almost every day. we would stop at wawa, get a little snack, and eat it BEFORE getting home to avoid hearing nonni yell that it would ruin our appetite for dinner. all the grandkids would gather for pizza night every friday at their house throughout our lives. he even specially ordered me my own pizza from “ron’s” or “villa russo’s” because he knew i HATED pizza hut. he was the most hardworking person. papa started working as a kid back in virginia for $0.10 an hour. there, he learned the true meaning of sacrifice, work ethic and passion.
