Paul Davies’ first solo show in Sydney in five years. A homecoming for an artist whose paintings feel like dreams. “Layers in motion” is on now at @cassandrabird.gallery

Weekend in Montreux. Some decorating ideas from the Chateau Chillon (medieval was maximalist). Also garden inspiration - they play a strong council plant game here. I took my love of Swiss trains to the next level by booking a hotel room right next to the station (might have been too close). Also a hike from Glion to Rochers de Naye which, unwittingly, involved an ascent of 1200m.

Weekend in Verbier followed by Fribourg (yes Fribourg. Don’t knock it if you haven’t tried it). Snowshoeing is the new skiing. One highlight missing from this gallery is sharing a sauna with a Geneva-based oil trader and discussing the outlook (“We’ve just had our best ever month. But if Trump doesn’t cement the ceasefire it’s going to get weird.”) The pâté-en-croûte was exceptional (venue to be discussed in @financialreview ). As was, in its own way, the Freiburger burger from @holycowgourmetburger made with Vacherin Fribourgeois AOP, rösti and a sauce made from local wine. Note the hotel slippers while queuing to enter the club…. #verbier #fribourg

Financial Review x Ralph Lauren hosted guests for lunch in the chicest of surroundings at the Australian Open on Friday, followed by a bit of brilliance from Alcaraz and Moutet. And yes, I play tennis double breasted. @poloralphlauren @afrmag @financialreview @australianopen @channel9

NYE in Tasmania, including the new #anselmkiefer wing @monamuseum (epic) and the very old @hobartrtc (I was terrible). Absolute highlight was @leightonhousetas with parlour games, tarot readings (with thanks to @claudeai ) and swims in the South Esk River. #queenofwands #blubberpot

When the world was upside down and we had absolutely no idea what to put in AFR Magazine, Tony Davis came up with the idea of interviewing leaders from Italy’s fashion and design industries about how the pandemic would change their craft. One of them was Giorgio Armani. “We are now beginning to understand,” Mr Armani said for that mid-2020 feature, “what true luxury is: the freedom to walk outside, to travel, to see our friends and loved ones.” It felt extra special to have him on our cover because I’ve always felt that Armani was a very AFR Magazine brand. My application to become its editor was a website built on Squarespace. For the hero video on the landing page I pulled footage from a Giorgio Armani runway show. I’ve said many time since; if you want to make something look AFR Magazine, stick it in Armani. I never got the chance to meet him. But wanted to say thanks, all the same. Photo by @simonpwatson

In tomorrow’s @financialreview you’ll find our 30th anniversary special issue of @afrmag . And who better for the cover than Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI? I was asked today by @mediaweekaus about the future of magazines. I said that when the man at the helm of the AI revolution makes time for an exclusive interview to be on the cover, the future of print is looking good. We flew the Financial Review’s technology editor Paul Smith to San Francisco to interview Altman. He was photographed for the magazine by @winniwintermeyer . Paul took weeks to research and write his 5800 word story, which was edited by me and @laurenssams . Pages were designed by @timbeor and @samuelpaulbennett . Factchecking and subediting was done by @rebecca__holland and Stephanie Pegler. Ads were sold by Amanda Upton, @clomoo and their brilliant team, so that we had a bumper 120-page issue to fill with great stories like this one. When it comes to compelling, nuanced and informed long-form journalism about how the world is changing, when it comes to innovative photography and design, when it comes to inspiring and uplifting fashion shoots and on-the-pace columns on food, wine, travel and style, nothing beats a magazine. Happy birthday @afrmag . Here’s to the next 30 years

Instagram doesn’t need more shots of the Alhambra. But it does need to see these anchovies (thanks for the Granada tips @juanfraentramba !). Also more #semanasanta antics. Also, churros, to which I finally succumbed after holding out for 1.5 weeks.

Baroque design #inspo at La Inglesia del Salvador in Seville. Also quite taken by this courtyard at the Cathedral de Santa Maria.

Palm Sunday during Semana Santa in Seville. Imagine an entire city dressed in their Sunday best, balconies festooned with red velvet, brass bands, drums and parades of people in outfits that have absolutely nothing to do with what you’re thinking.
