On one of Detroit’s snowiest days this winter, our Lending team took a Shop + Walk along the Avenue of Fashion, supporting small businesses in our portfolio and spending time in the neighborhoods we invest in every day.
From Detroit-made gear at Three Thirteen, to warming up with tea and coffee at Lily’s & Elise Tea House, exploring art at MAC Galleries, and winding down at The Locker Room. this day was about showing up, circulating dollars locally, and strengthening community.
If you’re looking for an all-day hang, start on the Avenue of Fashion. Locally owned businesses supporting their communities and helping make the city more vibrant every day.
#Shoplocal. Support #neighborhoods. Invest in Detroit.
Art deserves conversation.
Join us tomorrow for our monthly mixer Art Talk, an intimate evening of viewing, dialogue, and connection🥂

As chair of this year’s ArtEx Art Crawl, I was honored to help reimagine our organization, @torchofwisdomfoundation tradition of an annual art auction into something more personal. We began at the home of Dr. Margaret Betts, where my “unk”, the legendary dealer George N’Namdi shared how he entered the world of art. From there, our bus carried us to the homes of Attorney Paul Curtis & retired Judge Daphne Curtis, Sharon Gamblin, and Marsha Philpot — board member of the Detroit Institute of Arts. Each host graciously opened their doors, showing us how Detroit’s collectors live with, love, and preserve art. The presence of artists such as Marta Carvajal, Maat Dismuke, Onzie Norman, my mother, Priscilla Phifer, and Asha Walidah — whose works could also be seen on the walls of some of the collections — made the experience even richer.
We closed at MAC Gallery, where gallery managers hung some very fly pieces just for the occasion, and where owner Eric McKissic and manager Chris offered remarks that reminded us why this matters: to preserve and amplify culture.
This crawl wasn’t just about gathering — it was about affirming Detroit’s place in the long continuum of Black art. From the Pen & Palette( look that up) 100 years ago days to now, we continue to honor, preserve, and expand this living tradition. For the culture. For the community. For the Torch of Wisdom Foundation, Inc.💪🏾💪🏾
