Thanks to everyone who participated in or attended the MacEwan Documentary Short Film Festival on April 1, 2026. A partnership between our program and Arts & Cultural Management, the evening brought together filmmakers, students, and community to celebrate powerful storytelling by emerging MacEwan creators.
A strong showing from our program! Best Student Film went to graduating BCS student Eric To (BCSC 302: Online Content Production, taught by Marlene Wurfel), and Best Alumni Film to grads Adrian Ting and Savannah Johnson (based on work from BCSC 207: Documentary Film Principles and Practices, taught by Sheena Rossiter). Film links and photos below.
Shoutout to Marlene Wurfel and Dr. David Garfinkle for adjudicating, and to our partners in Arts & Cultural Management—Chair Heather Fitzsimmons Frey, instructor Candace Makowichuk , and the AGAD 223 student organizing team.
The evening began with a reception and red carpet, followed by seven short documentaries exploring culture, identity, community, careers, music, and faith, and wrapped with a filmmaker Q&A.
Congratulations to all filmmakers, and thank you to the students, staff, adjudicators, donors, and volunteers who made this event possible.

Events like this highlight the strength of Edmonton’s film community and the importance of supporting the next generation of storytellers.
Department Chair Iain Macpherson recently delivered a keynote, “From Silos to Signal: Strengthening the City’s Voice,” for the City of Edmonton’s Strategic Communications team, on the relationship between internal and organizational communication in municipal messaging—and how aligning internal and external communication can produce clearer, more effective public messaging.

A special premiere of “The Perfect Match” at the Northwest Film Festival on April 11 at 7 PM at Metro Cinema. This powerful documentary, directed by Sandro Silva, and produced by Sheena Rossiter, Assistant Professor for MacEwan University Department of Communication, follows a Ghanaian father’s inspiring advocacy for stem cell donation after his son’s battle with rare cancer.
As stated by the Canadian Blood Services organization, “currently people who are Black, Indigenous, Asian, Hispanic or of mixed-race heritage collectively make up only about a third of registrants.” This initiative is aimed at ensuring the Black community has direct access to this critical conversation about representation and health equity.
It is not just a slogan when we say “Representation Matters.” Representation saves lives.
Tickets can be purchased at Showpass - see linktree in bio
All are welcome! Please share and spread the word! Let’s pack up the theatre! Come one, come all!
