This birthday has been one of the best and most reflective I’ve ever had.
There is so much in transition right now. So much that feels uncertain, at risk, or not quite going the way I planned. And yet… there is also so much that is beautiful, steady, and deeply right in my life. Both things are true at the same time.
Ever since moving to the East Coast, I’ve dreaded my birthday. I convinced myself it was cursed. The weather was always bad. Something always seemed to go wrong. Even when that stopped being true over the last few years, I still carried that old feeling with me. I celebrated reluctantly. Every well-wish felt like I was bracing for the other shoe to drop.
But this year feels different.
I spent an amazing Valentine’s Day with my wife and son. I’m so grateful that I have them to celebrate with — and that we’re all healthy. The weather sucks… and somehow I’m not bothered by it. I’m writing this from a phone I’m blessed to be able to afford. I woke up today and didn’t check the weather to decide how I should feel. I noticed the sore throat, took some medicine, and kept moving.
I received calls and texts from friends and family. I thanked God for them and everything I have — and for everything I believe is still on the way.
For the first time in a long time, I feel free.
Free from expecting things from others.
Free from trying to live up to others’ expectations.
Free from caring too much.
And free from trying not to care at all.
I’m starting to feel like myself again. And that might be the greatest gift of all.
