Done! 🤯 I designed this mural for Destination Tomorrow
@destinationtomorrow452 , in their Bronx LGBTQ+ center. For all my community murals, the theme is developed through conversations with the community about how they want to be represented, what they want the mural to embody, and how they want it to make people feel. After asking the Destination Tomorrow staff a series of questions to help me develop the design, the overarching themes became: a place you thrive, not survive. Leadership, healing, resilience, community, care, joy, being from the Bronx and Queer, representation of Black & Brown Trans elders, transformation, growth, and possibility. The top portrait pictures Destination Tomorrow's founder, Sean Coleman (
@seanecoleman ). The staff wanted me to add him into the mural, as he's the backbone of this org- among all of the amazing staff that keep it going. Mr. Coleman is pictured holding a translucent trans pride flag that weaves its way into an ambiguous butterfly wing shape, symbolizing the way he's taken community under his wing and created a space for transformation resilience. I wanted the mural to feel kind of like a double exposure photo, so as you look closely you can see the portraits are overlapping the 3rd Ave- 149th street station, which is the stop you get off of to get to Destination Tomorrow. The protesters in the wing are holding signs that speak to Destination Tomorrow's mission of supporting the economic, social, and mental empowerment of all LGBTQ folx, as well as creating space for trans and queer futures to flourish. This mural is located in Destination Tomorrow's learning lab, so I hope that all the young trans and queer people studying in this space will feel inspired, supported, and at home. 🫂 Thank you to all the amazing staff that welcomed me into this space and supported this project along the way. Destination Tomorrow is ittttttt and they got you if you need them! This mural is for all my queer n trans loves, thank u❤️
