Hi! I'm @lys_arango , a Spanish documentary photographer, and I'm taking over the @womenphotograph account this week. Currently, I'm sharing images from my personal project, "Until the Corn Grows Back," which focuses on chronic malnutrition in Guatemala. 📸 Minga and her husband on their way to San Miguel Acatán hospital after more than 24 hours of labor at home. When they realized Minga's life was in danger, they sought help, and a community member transported them to the hospital, where the child was finally born. Minga is among the 29% of pregnant women who suffer from anemia. This condition can be perilous, as it is associated with 22% of maternal deaths and 24% of neonatal deaths. Hello everyone! I'm @lys_arango , a Spanish documentary photographer currently based in Paris. This week, I'm taking over the @womenphotograph account to share with you three personal projects dear to my heart. Let's begin with my series "Until the corn grows back," which I started in Guatemala in 2019. Over the course of three years, I documented the daily lives of Mayan communities in the region known as the dry corridor, where climate change is destroying the crops of hundreds of thousands of small-scale farmers. This crisis has led to a dire humanitarian situation, with one in every two children suffering from chronic malnutrition, the highest rate in Latin America and the Caribbean. 📸 Several families have breakfast on the porch of a shed before starting their workday in a large coffee plantation in San Antonio Huista, Huehuetenango. Andrés tiene 62 años. El conflicto armado en Colombia lo desplazó hasta un asentamiento informal junto a la frontera con Venezuela, donde vive con su esposa, que tiene alzhéimer. Sobreviven con una sopa de papa al día. Su historia forma parte de “Hambre y Conflicto”, publicada en la serie Exposición de @el_pais *** En Colombia, un país marcado por más de medio siglo de conflicto armado, la promesa de paz sigue siendo lejana para miles de comunidades indígenas, afrodescendientes y campesinas. El hambre es uno de los efectos más silenciosos de la guerra: los confinamientos y los desplazamientos forzados cortan el acceso a la tierra, al río, al cultivo. Colombia es el cuarto país del mundo con más desplazados internos y el primero de América Latina. Southern Lebanon is one of the most fertile agricultural regions in the country. Tobacco, olive trees, livestock, orchards. Since October 2023, most of its farmers have been unable to return to their land due to Israeli bombardments, forced displacement, and soil contamination. Adnan Hassan Khoshaysh fled after an Israeli airstrike destroyed his home. I photographed him in July 2024 at the Hotel Montana in Marwaniyeh, a building that had been abandoned since 2005 and reopened to shelter people displaced by the conflict. The second image is the view from inside a greenhouse in a southern village that has been empty since that same date. According to a joint report by @accioncontraelhambre.espana , @oxfaminternational , and Insecurity Insight, several farmers saw their production reduced to zero. Joumana fled at night from Odaisseh, in southern Lebanon, five days after the Israeli bombardments began in October 2023. She thought it would be temporary. She took almost nothing: not enough clothes, not the provisions she had prepared for winter, not the pickles, not the olives she had just harvested. Not the photos of her children either, which were left behind in a bag. When the reality of displacement set in, she sold her jewelry to feed her family and cover daily expenses. Joumana was born in 1976, in war. She grew up in war, married in war, raised her children in war. I photographed her in her room at the Hotel Montana in Marwaniyeh in July 2024. This week, the Israeli army has ordered new mass evacuations in southern Lebanon. According to @unicef , 816,700 people have been displaced. Mahmoud Reslan left Odaisseh in October 2023 and has not returned. His village sits on Lebanon’s southern border, where borders are not lines on a map but the exact place where fear begins. When he finally went to see what remained, he found his house destroyed and the land as if it had never existed. “There is no life. There are no plants. Nothing is left.” Since then he has been living at the Hotel Montana in Marwaniyeh, the largest collective shelter in the south, where he has worked from the very first day: welcoming families, setting up beds, making sure no one goes without food. This week the Israeli army ordered residents of southern Lebanon to flee north of the Litani River. En Arnoun, al sur del Líbano, casi todo el pueblo había huido cuando conocimos a Hassan Cotbain, de 84 años, el agricultor más anciano del lugar. Era finales de julio de 2024, pocos días antes de la ofensiva terrestre israelí. Hassan seguía allí, regando su huerto. Decidido a resistir cuando todo a su alrededor se desmoronaba. Un año y medio después, las tierras del sur del Líbano siguen en el centro del conflicto. Las autoridades libanesas han acusado a Israel de fumigar aldeas agrícolas con herbicidas (identificados como glifosato) en concentraciones muy superiores a las permitidas. 2025 Este año crucé océanos con un jet lag persistente y la sensación de no terminar de aterrizar nunca. Entre encargos, exposiciones y conferencias, el calendario se volvió un mapa en movimiento. Viajé a Washington, Sharjah y la isla de La Reunión, donde compartí fotografías en espacios de transmisión. Hablé de mis proyectos, del tiempo y de la energía que los sostienen. Volví a exponer en una galería Leica, esta vez en Madrid, rodeada de gente que amo. Mostré mi trabajo en el sur de Italia, a medio camino entre las raíces heredadas y las que se construyen lejos. Trabajé en París con mujeres que imaginaron otras versiones de sí mismas delante de la cámara. Confiamos. Inventamos. Dejamos que el sueño se filtrara en lo real. Me adentré en cuevas del Loira para entender las formas de habitar lo subterráneo. Regresé a Guatemala gracias a un premio. Volví a mirar el maíz crecer con la paciencia de quien sabe que algunas historias no se terminan nunca. Mi cuerpo pidió atención. Llegaron las pruebas, los miedos. Aprendí a frenar sin querer hacerlo. Bailé cuando el cuerpo lo permitió. Me dejé cuidar por mis amigas. Volví a casa de mi madre y todo encajó un poco más. Dije que sí. Me comprometí. Cerré la puerta de París. Hice cajas sin nostalgia heroica. Me mudé a Marsella. Ahora el mar aparece sin avisar y algo en mí baja el volumen. Este año fue cansancio y celebración. Y aquí sigo. Ajustando el paso.

Ya pronto comienza la cosecha del maíz en Guatemala y siento una alegría profunda al poder estar de regreso en este país que me es tan querido. Es el sexto año que acompaño a estas comunidades y a su relación íntima con la tierra, un vínculo que he visto ponerse a prueba y renacer, una y otra vez. Cada gesto en el campo es una lección de humildad y de fuerza. Je ferme les yeux et je revois ce moment. Il y a tout juste une semaine, je recevais le Prix CCFD Terre Solidaire pour mon projet Until the Corn Grows Back, sur le lien entre la faim et le changement climatique au Guatemala. Une soirée pleine d’émotion, partagée avec ma famille, mes amis et de précieuses complicités professionnelles. Félicitations aux autres lauréats : @lalodealmeida et @historiassencillas , au prix du public @natalya.saprunova , ainsi qu’au prix honorifique décerné à @ismailabuhatab , photographe gazaoui assassiné par l’armée israélienne en juin dernier. Merci à @ccfd.terresolidaire et à @_la_saif , au jury, au festival @lagacillyphoto et surtout aux communautés du Couloir de la sécheresse guatémaltèque pour leur confiance.
