EASY SLAMS THAT ARE HARD – Part 8 This is the Slam at the end of Abhorrent Contraception by Sanguisugabogg. Tuning: F standard The Riff slows down after the feedback bit about 8bpm so watch your timing coming back in to that chug. Comment “BOGG” and I’ll post the tone settings I used for this vid. * my pitch on the last few pinch harmonics is a bit off. right fret but wrong node. Also i get 2-1 confused with 1-2 at one point. Dont make that mistake! #EasySlamsThatAreHard #Sanguisugabogg #BrutalDeathMetal #SlamRiff #DeathMetalGuitar #MetalGuitar #DownTuned #FStandard #GuitarTone #DeathMetal

NGD // BC Rich Gunslinger Legacy Series + Dimmu Borgir Riffs NGD. Picked up a BC Rich Gunslinger Legacy Series and this thing is evil. Straight out of the box and still in E standard, so I figured some Dimmu Borgir riffs from “Blessings Upon The Throne of Tyranny” felt appropriate. The Duncan Distortion absolutely rips punchy, aggressive, and cuts through perfectly for this kind of riffing. Loving this guitar already. Raw camera audio here too. No post mix, just the amp in the room. #BCRich #DimmuBorgir #Gunslinger #MetalGuitar #BlackMetal #DeathMetal #GuitarTone #SeymourDuncan #DuncanDistortion #NGD #GuitarRiffs #MetalRiffs #BlessingsUponTheThroneOfTyranny #ExtremeMetal #Guitarist

Putridity Guitar Tone (Neural DSP Nameless X) Brutal Death Metal Tone Here’s the tone I used for the Putridity slam in my latest clip. This is my attempt at recreating that filthy, grinding tone using Neural DSP Nameless X. It’s not the exact tone or settings used by the band just the closest I can get with the plugin I’m currently running. No IR here either, which definitely makes it harder to fully nail that raw character, but this gets in the ballpark. Dark, tight, and nasty just how it should be. EASY SLAMS THAT ARE HARD – Part 7 This one is the slam from Zombie Oral Sex by Putridity. Absolutely disgusting riff. On the surface it’s just straight eighth notes, but the real magic is in how the palm muting switches on and off. That contrast is what gives the riff its movement and makes it hit so hard. It’s a great example of how a simple rhythmic idea can become incredibly brutal with the right articulation. The progression is a little deceptive too. It never really leaves the first four frets, but it isn’t especially linear, so take your time learning how it moves. It’s mostly built around root and fourth-based chugs, with the occasional tritone thrown in for extra ugliness. And of course, it wouldn’t be complete without that signature pinch harmonic fill, something Andrea Ciccio has absolutely mastered. #EasySlamsThatAreHard #Putridity #BrutalDeathMetal #SlamRiff #DeathMetalGuitar #MetalGuitar #DownTuned #GuitarReels #BrutalDeathMetalRiffs #GuitarLessons

Tone settings at the end — watch to the end for the Nameless X patch. EASY SLAMS THAT ARE HARD – Part 6 This is the iconic closing slam from Dissecting thee Apostles by Disgorge off Consume the Forsaken. A perfect lesson in brevity and dynamics. You don’t need a long, drawn-out section to deliver a crushing ending. Sometimes a few perfectly placed bars hit harder than an entire breakdown. Disgorge were masters of this micro-dynamic approach. The way this section breathes, surges, and then slams shut is a huge part of why it’s so effective. Keep the chugs tight, pay attention to the accents, and let the dynamics do the heavy lifting. That’s where the real weight comes from. Tone settings are at the end as usual. This is from Carnivorous Mutilation by Iniquitous Monolith. Built around a groove-first approach. Chromatic, tritone-heavy chugs that lock in hard before anything else. You can use all the weird intervals you want, but if it doesn’t groove, it’s not a riff. That’s always the rule: groove comes first. Everything else is secondary. #deathmetal #brutaldeathmetal #metalriff #guitar #guitarist #metalguitar #riff #heavymetal #extrememetal #slamriff #chug #groove #guitartok #metalhead #aussiemetal #perthmusic #guitarplayer

Inside/Outside picking nightmare Here’s a diminished whole-half run across 7 strings designed to fix one of the most common issues in guitar playing: inconsistent alternate picking when crossing strings. This lick is strict up/down alternate picking the entire way through, and every string change forces you to alternate between inside picking and outside picking. Stay aware of which stroke (down or up) you land on every time you change strings. That’s exactly where most players lose control. I play it up to speed, then break it down at half speed with tabs so you can follow along and really lock it in. Try this for 5 minutes a day and you’ll start to feel your picking become way more consistent, controlled, and accurate. EASY SLAMS THAT ARE HARD – Part 5 Tone settings at the end — watch to the end for the Nameless X patch. This is the slam at 2:18 from Consummating Omophagia by Cephalotripsy. Ultra caveman. First 4 frets only. Absolute chug fest. This is one of those riffs that sounds brain-dead simple but actually takes control to make it hit properly. If the chugs aren’t tight, it just falls apart. Lock in the right hand, keep the palm mutes consistent, and don’t let the timing drift — that’s what gives it that punch. And the vocals in this section are insane. Angel Ochoa absolutely destroys it here — blew me away the first time I heard it back in ‘07. Tone at the end as usual. #EasySlamsThatAreHard #Cephalotripsy #BrutalDeathMetal #SlamRiff #DeathMetalGuitar #MetalGuitar #DownTuned #GuitarReels #NamelessX #NeuralDSP

I Used a Jazz Scale to Write a Death Metal Song This riff is from Devouring the Regurgitated off our album Monstrous Degradation by @iniquitousmonolith The entire song was written using the whole tone scale — something you’d normally hear in jazz or fusion, not brutal death metal. But that ambiguous, unsettling sound actually works insanely well for riffs like this. Tri-tone chugs are in and It’s also ridiculously easy to harmonize — just take the same riff shape and move it up 6 frets and it locks in a flat 5th harmony perfectly. If you’re writing riffs and want something that sounds different without overthinking it, give it a try. #deathmetal #brutaldeathmetal #metalriff #guitar #guitarist #metalguitar #riff #heavymetal #extrememetal #wholetone #jazzguitar #fusion #guitartok #metalhead #aussiemetal #perthmusic #guitarplayer

Easy Slams that are HARD – Part 4 Tone settings at the end — watch to the end for the Nameless X patch. This is the end section of Engulfed in Excruciation by Defeated Sanity off Chapters of Repugnance. One of my favourite moments in death metal, easily. It doesn’t look that hard on paper but there’s a lot going on that makes it hit the way it does. The build into the break, that drum fill, then the slam just carries all the way through to the end. Big thing with this one is locking into the feel of it. Let the dynamics do the work and don’t just bash through it — it needs to stay controlled to really land. The tone is super dark and unique too. Ive read it was a Zoom Tri-Metal pedal into a Marshall JCM 2000, so I tried to get close using Neural DSP Nameless X. No IR here, which makes it tricky, but it’s in the ballpark. Full tone settings at the end. #EasySlamsThatAreHard #DefeatedSanity #BrutalDeathMetal #SlamRiff #DeathMetalGuitar #NeuralDSP #NamelessX #MetalGuitar #DeathMetal

EASY SLAMS THAT ARE HARD – Part 3 Tone breakdown at the end — watch to the end for the settings. This is the slam at 0:13 from Savagely Beaten by Inveracity off Circle of Perversion. Slow, hard, and ridiculously heavy for D standard tuning. • Downpick all the chugs — keep them tight and consistent • Watch the transition into the short 6-note run at the end of the riff cycle • Land that run right on the beat — it’s a big jump (1st fret to 9th fret on the D string) • be quick and precise on the shift to avoid excess string noise Tone-wise, this era sounds to me like they used the Ampeg VH-140C, so I dialed in my version using Neural DSP Nameless X. Full tone breakdown at the end.
