I’ve photographed the Chinese New Year event at Hsi Lai Temple for 18 years. This year rain was expected, but the sun broke through and we were gifted a nice, brisk afternoon. The Abbot of the temple talked to the audience, then the performances followed. First the traditional Chinese dragons and lions, followed by a master ink artist from Taiwan, a Japanese drum troupe, Chinese dancers, martial artists from LA area, and finally a spiritual dance of Native Americans to close out the show. While in Santa Barbara the day after Thanksgiving, I came upon this busker singing in Spanish while playing a traditional Mariachi type of guitar. Most just walked past him as he didn’t look like your typical busker. But as I listened I realized he was playing an original song about the struggle immigrants face just trying to work and feed their families through impoverished conditions daily.
