Shells (Curaçao 1915-1985), 2025. Shells is an installation that addresses the impact of the petroleum industry on the Caribbean island of Curaçao. The work features a modified claw machine containing seventy numbered terracotta Saint James scallops. The clay used for these shells integrates sand and soil from various locations on the island. An accompanying historiographic soundscape presents an auditory narrative, composed of field recordings, archival material, samples, and original music. Supported by @ndsm & @ndsmloods

Never give up (Curaçao, 2024) — Great news at the end of the year: my filmplan for ‘Pabou’ has been approved by the Netherlands Film Fund! After researching the topic for two years and trying to get the funding for this film in place, I was honestly starting to think it wasn’t going to happen. But if spending time with the people from Liga Pabou thought me one thing, it’s this: never give up! We didn’t! In 2025 we’ll finally be able to start shooting our documentary trying to capture this fascinating part of Curaçao’s culture. Thanks to everyone involved until now. Can’t wait!

Little League (Curaçao, 2024) — This summer I attended the Caribbean Championships for Little League baseball in Curaçao, after having researched and followed a team for a full season in the year before. I had actually hoped to be shooting a documentary about Curaçaoan Little League and the inspiring community that nurtures it. Unfortunately we didn’t manage to get the funding in place on time. Yesterday I handed in a new filmplan that, if approved, would allow us to finally shoot this beautiful story next season. Fingers crossed.

A series of portraits of people who have a unique hobby or lifestyle on the Caribbean island of Curaçao. They are ‘islands onto themselves’, who can be seen as ‘strange’ locally, but often turn out to be a source of culture and inspiration for the island. Published in Hyper Epic’s journal. Words and photography by Lyangelo Vasquez. Link in bio.
