Meet Margarita, a true lung cancer warrior. In September, she underwent life-changing surgery where her entire left lung was removed using groundbreaking robotic technology. Our thoracic surgery team is specially trained to perform complex lung resections, in which a part or all of a lung is removed, using the cutting-edge da Vinci robotic surgery system. Dr. Mohamed El Zaeedi, �thoracic surgeon at Memorial Cancer Institute of Memorial Healthcare System, successfully performed a minimally invasive procedure to remove Margarita's entire left lung through a small incision—an approach that avoids the traditional large chest wall incision (thoracotomy). This advanced surgical technique is offered by only a few highly specialized cancer centers nationwide. The result? Less pain, a quicker recovery, and a faster return to normal life. In fact, Margarita was walking the very next day and was able to return home just a few days after surgery—a testament to the power of modern technology and expert care. As we observe Lung Cancer Awareness Month, we want to remind everyone of the importance of early detection and regular check-ups. Yolanda Ortiz faced a relentless battle: stage four extensive-stage small cell lung cancer that had spread to her liver and bones. Traditional chemotherapy was proving ineffective, but a "new dawn" arrived at Memorial Cancer Institute. The breakthrough? Tarlatamab, a Bispecific T-cell engager (BiTE). This innovative immunotherapy acts as a molecular matchmaker, binding to a specific protein on cancer cells while simultaneously grabbing the body’s own immune T-cells. By pulling them into close contact, it enables the T-cells to recognize and destroy the cancer. “It helps keep the disease at bay and, in the best-case scenario, the cancer becomes inactive,” explains Dr. Gelenis Domingo. Today, Yolanda’s scans are stable. She is back to driving and traveling to Connecticut to spend time with her family.
