The Danish writer and poet Hans Christian Andersen understood this like no other:
The heart of a poet sees beauty in everyday things, things you might otherwise pass by without a second thought. These can contain an unknown, deeper layer, if only you are open to it.
The Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg used the poem Des Dichters Herz as the basis for one of his Lyric Pieces.
Enjoy here a version for violin and harp by Eva Tebbe! Let yourself be carried away by swirling air currents, sparkling waves of sound, and imaginary floral scents! (and pay attention to the subtle things in life)..
You do not grasp the surging urge of the sea,
Nor the spirit of tones in the vibration of strings,
The feeling in the flower’s balsamic scent,
The sun’s flames against storm and air,
The birds’ twittering in yearning delight,
And yet you believe you understand the poet’s breast?
There it roars more fiercely than the sea’s surge,
There lies the source of every song,
There blooms the flower with eternal fragrance,
There it burns without cooling air,
There spirits struggle in yearning delight,
And in that struggle the poet’s breast bleeds to death!
— Hans Christian Andersen
