Glasgow International 2026 Spotlight 💡 A Sensation Never Yet Known, Luke Fowler @lukefowler78 Presented by GLOSS @gloss_cic ; Curated by Dominic Paterson A Sensation Never Yet Known is a new film work by Luke Fowler exploring the ongoing history of electronic music in Scotland. Fowler’s film combines footage of recent workshops led by Glasgow Library of Synthesised Sound (GLOSS) with explorations of the practice of UK composer Janet Beat, an electronic and electro-acoustic music pioneer. In material sourced from an interview with Fowler, Janet vividly recalls her earliest memories of sound and her experiences of being doubly marginalised as a woman musician in a then-male-dominated field and a composer of electronic music at a time when it was viewed with suspicion by the musical establishment, including the Musicians’ Union. The project is informed by Fowler’s collaboration with GLOSS and with University of Glasgow musician-researchers Louise Harris and Kevin Leomo. Extending Fowler’s long-standing interest in how cultural and political figures of the 1960s and 1970s are remembered, A Sensation Never Yet Known also reflects his own practice as a musician and an artist-filmmaker. 📍 A Sensation Never Yet Known is at GLOSS, 5 Florence Street, 5 – 18 June, 22 - 24 June by appointment. Visit the link in our bio to see full dates and opening times. A Sensation Never Yet Known is supported by GLOSS and Outer Spaces @outerspaces.scotland . Additionally supported by Glasgow International with funds from the Scottish Government's Festival EXPO Fund Images: Courtesy the artist and The Modern Institute / Toby Webster Ltd

SAVE Trongate 103 - stop the evictions - sign the petition. join the protest tomorrow. 12 pm to 2 pm at 229 George Street (Glasgow City Chambers). These are Glasgow cultural institutions that have been instrumental in the careers of many of the artists, curators, filmmakers, photographers, printmakers from the city, employ and train hundreds and have a massive social purpose outside the "art world". Their loss will be hugely felt and unrecoverable. I had a studio at the historic Mercat Building until our landlord -City Property- *who are at the heart of this debacle* evicted us (and all the other tenants) a few years ago in order to make more profit from the site (sound familiar?). City Property (who got the contract from GCC to “manage” their buildings) showed zero concern for their tenants or for the upkeep of the building : heating broke - they didn’t bother to fix it, lifts broke- same. There was constant leaks, water ingress, broken pipes and windows and the communal areas were foul and unsanitary - basically full of bird shit. I can’t say they were much better than slumlords . This is one of the last photos I took in the building..

➡️ Plus d'infos : cinemadureel.org/section/luke-fowler/ (link in bio) ____ [LUKE FOWLER: IN PRAISE OF MARGINS] This programme invites the festivalgoers to be involved with the work of Luke Fowler, filmmaker musician, who rejects historical, aesthetic, and narrative constraints, celebrating the margins. A sensitive, almost organic involvement with which he embraces the world, whilst also revealing himself. In fact, while his work intertwines the contemporary history of the Left with underground and artistic movements in Great Britain, his fragmented films seem to be pervaded by mirror effects where impressionistic sound and visual elements and the editing work speak as much about others as about himself. Fond of 16 mm – a modest and artisanal form that disconnects image and sound – Luc Fowler plays on narrative constraints to highlight gesture. His cinema is an immersive experience that unfolds in waves, by accumulation, but also in fragments, which as if suspended remain and persist for an instant on the retina. #cinémadureel

So proud of my mum who has just been given an award for service to sociology by the British Sociological Association. She will receive it in Manchester in April at the Annual conference. Where they will show my tribute to her “mums cards” . True to form and her life-long Marxist politics her acceptance speech didn’t mince words either- On receiving the award, Professor Fowler said, “I am deeply honoured by this award. But I would like to take this opportunity to refer to the perils that menace sociology at present. I was born in 1943: our generation enjoyed, through the 1960s and early 70s, a period of unprecedented access to material necessities and scholarships for both middle-class and even most working-class people. Those conditions have long gone; instead, we see the rise of unemployment and of militarism. In a world as dangerous as the present, in which the threat of fascism comes even from our allies, we must anticipate and practice acts of solidarity and resistance. I see sociology as particularly vulnerable for early targeting by universities. In the months to come, we need to remain ultra-vigilant so as to stand up not just for our discipline, but also for racism and ethnicity studies, for feminist, social-democratic and Marxist thought more broadly, for exiled academics and immigrants, and for the rejection of redundancies.”

Luke Fowler @lukefowler78 is an artist, filmmaker, and musician based in Glasgow. His work explores the limits and conventions of biographical and documentary filmmaking, and has often been compared to the British Free Cinema of the 1950s. Working with archival footage, photography and sound, Fowler’s filmic montages create portraits of intriguing, counter cultural figures, including Scottish psychiatrist R. D. Laing and English composer Cornelius Cardew. In October, e-flux Screening Room presented “Weaving Memory,” a program of four recent films by Luke Fowler: On Weaving (2025, with Corin Sworn), N’importe Quoi (for Brunhild) (2023), N’importe Quoi (Extérieur – Jour) (2024), and Patrick (2020).   The screening was followed by a conversation between the artist, Lukas Brasiskis @@lukasbrasiskis , and the audience. The transcript of this conversation was edited for the present publication. Read it at e-flux Film Notes. Link in bio. Image: Luke Fowler and Corin Sworn, On Weaving (still), 2025.
