I loved watching the music documentary LIVE IT UP: the Mental As Anything story, a band that was the soundtrack to my childhood. I might be biased having a dad and uncle in the band but I think it is a truly wonderful music documentary that uses a lot of archival footage I hadn’t seen before and embodies the band’s spirit of creativity, joy, humour and fun.
It’s inspiring to see how a group of art students forged music (and art) careers in their own unique way during a peak era in Australia’s live music history. As my sister says in the documentary, the Mentals make people really happy, and I would say the documentary has the same effect. Congratulations to director @matthewnoelwalker and @bonsaifilms@beyondproductions.tv for making a truly special documentary. @liveitupmovie is showing in select cinemas Australia wide from today!
Also I loved seeing all the artist made music posters (and outfits like ones made from Paul Worstead fabric, and costumes made from alfoil for very fun music videos)

Book your spot for a special plein air painting workshop series with Lucy O’Doherty this January. @lucy_odoherty
Hosted from the Blackburn Gardens with a finale at Woollahra Gallery at Redleaf, this three-part workshop is designed for artists who want quiet, rigorous time with the landscape and the mentoring to refine it.
Bring the painting medium you prefer – oil, acrylic, watercolour or pastel – and your chosen outdoor materials. A small number of easels and boards will be available; please advise if you require one when booking. Places are limited to 15 participants per session to ensure personalised guidance and feedback.
Workshop Program:
Perspective & Composition – Saturday 17 January, 10:00AM - 1:00PM
Learn how to reduce complexity, define spatial structure and compose with intention. Lucy will demonstrate strategies for framing scenes quickly and confidently so you can move from observation to making with purpose.
Colour & Light – Thursday 22 January, 5:00PM - 8:00PM
Work in the golden hour, responding to the harbour’s changing palette. This session focuses on colour relationships, tonal clarity and capturing atmosphere with immediacy and restraint.
Developing a Personal Style – Saturday 31 January, 1:30PM - 4:30PM
Synthesise observational skill and material experimentation into a distinctive approach. The workshop concludes at Woollahra Gallery with a reflective review and an informal reception for participants.
Participants may attend a single session or the full three-part program.

Lucy O’Doherty is known for her dreamlike, atmospheric interiors and landscapes. Working primarily in oil and chalk pastel, she creates images of isolated rooms, pool houses and urban nooks, each adorned with a quiet luminosity. Her compositions often dwell in twilight or transitional moments, giving everyday scenes an otherworldly stillness. O’Doherty’s pastel drawing The Drifting Room exemplifies the artist’s gentle, considered style, capturing a fleeting moment during a commute.

This is the first print I’ve made from a soft pastel work and I’m really happy with how it turned out. I enjoy the challenge of capturing the intricate details of maximalist interiors as well as the nostalgic warmth of red booth restaurants and I think this particular work reflects both these aspects of my practice well.
This is a limited edition print and will only be available till the end of December through @chinaheights , link to print is in my bio. I’m also always on the lookout for more establishments with booth seating to draw and paint if anyone has any suggestions!
