Now open — Lucia Eames: Seeing with the Heart. On display at Via Solferino 11 in Milan from Tuesday, June 7th through Friday, June 10th during Milan Design Week.
Join the first in-depth exhibition of artwork by Lucia Eames when we unveil rarely seen works by the California optimist and sustainable aesthete during Salone del Mobile.
The exhibition focuses on the magical world of Lucia's visual poetry and brings abundance to four rooms of a historic apartment in the heart of Brera.
Hand stitching is a technique that allows for a precise and expressive translation of Lucia Eames’ visual language into textile form. Used in both Sunbirds and Butterfly from the Lucia Eames™️ Rug Collection, hand stitching is carried out using handbraided jute, enhancing the natural texture of the fiber while defining each shape with clarity and depth.

Lucia Eames explored marvelous representations of flowers—rooted in the ground and springing forth in expressive curvilinear forms. With delicate, curving stems and varied leaves and blossoms, she composed a magnificently bold display, all cut from a discarded letter.
Similar floral designs were adapted into a flyer, as well as realized in metal garden gates. This work also relates closely to her early involvement with the San Francisco Landscape Garden Show.
The hand-tufted rug, composed of two pile heights, evokes a field of tall grass, meticulously mown to reveal Lucia’s design.
Material: Hand tufted (with two pile heights) New Zealand Wool

This rug design originates from Butterfly #49, one of 191 butterflies Lucia Eames created from found paper in 1994 when inspired by her vivid childhood memories of the massive migration of monarch butterflies. She created each butterfly as a distinct individual, “like its genetics or a fingerprint, with endless iterations and subtle differences on the landscape of the paper.”
The high tufted, hand-knotted butterfly emerges from the flat woven, pileless field below, as if gently lifting into quiet ascent.

This stunning kilim with embroidered line drawing draws upon Lucia Eames’s vision, expressing all that a children’s museum—or even a child’s home—can be: a place of exploration and discovery. Her imagery evokes the outdoor natural world, filled with trees, flowers, birds, butterflies, snakes, and fish, as well as the world above, with clouds, the moon and even the unpictured sun. Indoor activities might include reading, investigation with a magnifying glass, and classes in ceramics and wood working. Such pursuits naturally foster curiosity, joy, and a lasting love of science, nature and the arts.

Lucia Eames was remarkably adept at shaping form with a simple pair of scissors. From nearly discarded materials, she created 191 butterflies—along with banners, hanging pieces, and sculptural forms—transforming fragments as humble as Carnation Instant Breakfast packets into marvelous three-dimensional creations.
She also produced a small series of works, circa 1977, closely related to this design—further extending her exploration of form, their relationships, and transformation.
This hand-tufted rug renders Lucia’s design as a three-dimensional relief, as if the forms had been gently carved into sand.

This rug design originates from Butterfly #47, one of 191 butterflies Lucia Eames created from found paper in 1994. The series was inspired by a vivid childhood memory: the massive migration of monarch butterflies, some of which paused to rest in the meadow at the Eames House in Pacific Palisades, California. Each butterfly was created as a distinct individual, “like its genetics or a fingerprint, with endless iterations and subtle differences on the landscape of the paper.”
As a single piece, Butterfly Jute provides a striking accent in any room; with three sizes and four colorways, it also invites the creation of a mass butterfly migration.

What a marvelous journey this past year has been! Despite our enthusiasm and excitement, we had to keep it under wraps until the reveal at Milan Design Week —and what a reveal it was, far exceeding even our wildest expectations. To see the finished pieces at full scale, assembled in a dialogue with one another, was extraordinary.
Seven of Lucia Eames’s designs have been translated into truly exquisite rugs by the Nanimarquina team in Barcelona in collaboration with artisans in India and Pakistan.Their care, sensitivity, curiosity, and extraordinary skill have brought these works to life as heirloom pieces—technical masterpieces in every sense.
Over the next two weeks, we’ll take a closer look at each of the rugs from the Lucia Eames Rug Collection and the stories behind all seven designs.
