The official release drops on March 21. There is no better way to announce this project than alongside an incredible, in-depth investigation by music journalist Judy Cantor-Navas. Her latest article dives into the untold history of “Mi Quimbín”—a massive 1970s Cuban dancefloor sensation written by the late José “Pepe” Couto and recorded with Los Bocucos. For decades, this explosive track has been loved worldwide as a salsa classic and a cornerstone of B-Boy hip-hop. But most people know it under a different name: “Que se sepa,” famously covered by Roberto Roena. Roena’s version became a massive hit, but Pepe Couto never received a dime in royalties or even a songwriter’s credit. We started Luchando Music to rescue forgotten Latin American and Caribbean gems, tell the true stories of the artists who made them, and start a real conversation about giving creators their due. Still vibrating from last weekend in Puerto Rico. 🇵🇷🇨🇺 It’s a dream come true not only to spin in my sister island, but to bring a little piece of the spirit of the Luchando Block Party we do every December in Old Havana to such an iconic place as @elboricuariopiedras . I also had the chance to spin at @el_mas_alla_hifi , an exquisite hi-fi bar in the heart of Old San Juan. Every single person I came across was so warm and welcoming. As soon as I opened my mouth the response was: “tu ere cubano velda?!” and from there, hugs and the utmost cariño. Thank you @mars_ros @aymecanto @benifilmmaker for making this possible.
