Research Week #22 & Open studio by @luc.a.neumann
Next week, @luc.a.neumann will be taking over the studio for their Research Week project! Read more about their plans and vision, and come check it out at an Open Studio day (THU 27.02 15:00 - 16:00)
About the project:
In this project Luca researches a new mode of working within their practice, focused on creating a new visual language that embodies the moving body through moving image. This comes from a a fascination with the dancer’s point of view, camera movement, and the dynamic relationship between the dancer and the camera - Who is moving whom? Who is leading, and who is following?
Additionally, Luca is deeply intrigued by the gaze on the body and how it is read, approaching it from a non-binary perspective.
Expanding the meaning of motion, time and space. The camera is not only a witness, but also a participant. It is a choreography for the body as much as the camera. The camera as fellow dancer, as duet partner, as performer.
About Luca:
Luca Neumann is a dutch visual artist and performer based in Rotterdam. In their embodied artistic practice they work with movement, choreography, filmmaking and photography.
Luca is currently studying Lens Based Media at Piet Zwart Institute and positioning themself as a dance filmmaker.
“I’m interested in the different conversations between these disciplines: How do they complement each other? When do they clash? How can this interaction create a new visual language?’
My ambition as an artist is to change the gaze on the moving body, bringing the body as close as possible and revealing things that can only be seen when dance and film both are participants not only witnesses of each other.”

Looking back at these two research days I did last may.
This was the starting point of the research I’m currently doing. Together with 6 wonderful dancers and Yvette van der Slik as assistent choreographer we worked on ‘how to embody the moving body through moving image and how the camera becomes a participant and not only a witness.
