Room for Us All by Lu Fraser and Sarah Warburton
Pam the squirrel has been looking forward to playing at the Big Tree forever. She’s practised her squeaks, she can bounce, she can pounce, she is READY. And then she gets there and is told there’s no room for her.
So she tries again. And again. Each time she’s told she needs something different. Sparkly bows. The right kind of tail. Hazelnut biscuits. The goalposts keep moving and Pam keeps running after them, changing herself each time, convinced that if she just tries hard enough she’ll finally belong.
I think most of us have felt that at some point. That desperate need to fit somewhere, and the way it can make you twist yourself into shapes that don’t feel like you anymore.
What makes this book work so well is that it doesn’t smooth over the hurt too quickly. The squirrels have to experience exclusion themselves before they really understand the impact of what they’ve done.
Roger the beetle is the quiet hero of the story. He keeps reminding Pam that she’s enough exactly as she is, and she keeps missing it. That detail felt painfully true to life.
For little ones, this is such a good conversation starter about kindness, inclusion, and what it actually feels like to be left out. The rhyming text makes it a joy to read aloud, and Sarah Warburton’s illustrations are full of humour and tiny details little readers will love spotting.
Definitely one that stays with you after reading.

🐿️’Room for us all’ by the great duo @lu.fraser and @s_warburton_ish_ is now out! Published by @simonschusteruk yesterday, this book needs to be on the shelves of every classroom because there’s always a situation when a child feels left out.
🌳 The rhyming text follows Pamela the squirrel as she navigates her feelings and tries to find a way forward after being left out of games in the Big Tree. The book teaches us that there’s space to be kind to everyone and be a friend like Roger the beetle.
🐿️ The illustrations of the woodland creatures are full of warmth and complement the text well.
🌳 I know my son will enjoy this now, but I think he’ll appreciate it even more so in the future when he experiences similar situations.
