Found objects are an important part of LR Vandy's practice, with artefacts from Britain's industrial and maritime history which explore the themes of pattern, labour and repetition found throughout her work.
For Rise, her solo exhibition at The Weston Gallery, Vandy created two new wall-based mandalas using traditional weaving loom shuttles, coloured threads and other found objects, including some shuttles featuring stamps from Huddersfield.

Standing in the centre of The Weston Gallery is LR Vandy's sculpture A Call to Dance, inspired by the maypole commonly found in villages around May Day.
Twisting and reaching upward, the maypole draws on longstanding traditions of ritual and seasonal renewal, where communities would dance together to mark the return of summer. The maypole was also seen as a call-to-arms and site of resistance for rural communities.

Standing at 5 metres tall outside The Weston, Dancing in Time: The Ties That Bind Us welcomes visitors to LR Vandy's Rise in the gallery.
Originally commissioned by National Museums Liverpool for the International Slavery Museum’s Martin Luther King Pop Up series and displayed on Liverpool Waterfront, the towering sculpture now overlooks YSP's historic landscape.

Filling The Weston Gallery with towering textured rope sculptures, LR Vandy’s Rise transforms the gallery into an immersive environment dominated by a soaring rope maypole.
With many works created on site at YSP, the form, structure and legacy of rope are reworked to create joyful, dancing forms.

Such an incredible experience working with you all. I’ve been gently guided and nurtured by your wonderful curatorial and production team over the last few months.
