This is one of the earliest non furniture pieces I painted in 2020. It was originally part of a wooden shipping box that housed a chair @ryanmariehelfant ordered which he then very generously offered to me knowing that I was sort of feverishly painting anything I could get my hands on. At the time, a lot of it was random wooden scraps I found on the streets. I ended up busting open the box and turning this panel into a totem that I titled, BBB. Each symbol a word and personal message like an LPX coded traffic light. It’s cool to see early work like this and acknowledge all the ways it feels technically amateur while also being able to see something foundational still at play and a POV that’s continuing to carry through my work today. It’s been kicking around in my studio for the past 5 years and in the middle of an ongoing clean out/reorganization it mostly just continues to take up space in a way I can’t justify anymore as I start to move towards working on my next body of work. Today I returned her to the streets, for free, for someone to hopefully take and bring into their home for its next cycle. The signal isn’t changing, just the location from where it’s blasting the call.

after years of admiring, being inspired by, and sharing things back and forth with Julia online, it was so cool to finally meet in person and properly fangirl over color and shape as our favorite universal language. Grateful we got to finally reach through the screen and into real life.
