After moving to D.C. in 1985, then 16-year-old Craig Wedren helped shape Shudder To Think into a standout act within the Dischord Records scene, evolving from a raw hardcore-adjacent sound into a complex style that eventually earned the respect of Ian MacKaye. The band pivoted to Epic Records in 1994 during the big alt-rock boom, releasing the sonic anomoly Pony Express Record before facing label pressure to produce more commercial hits for their follow-up, 50,000 B.C., which would be the group’s final studio album to date. Following their 1998 split, Wedren built a prolific career in film and television scoring, but the group reunited in 2025 to record new material. Despite a 20-year hiatus from their signature style, their collective muscle memory remained intact, allowing them to integrate modern digital tools with the foundational creative energy that defined their early years. Shudder To Think’s latest single, “Thirst Walk,” is out now on Dischord records. I spoke with Craig Wedren from his home studio in Los Angeles.

Today, while walking my toddler around the mall. The indoor playgrounds we came to visit, as well as the arcade, proved to be a sensory overload she was not interested in experiencing, so we went window shopping. After we had seen the ocean of teenagers rocking their latest ‘fits begin to thin, we found ourselves in a quiet, desolate nook of the South Hill Mall called Discount Collection. My kid didn’t have any problem with this place. It was remarkably unexciting, to a degree I can’t shake. The vast expanse is the shell of what was once a Macy’s department store, and it seems like they dont know what to do with it. So why not fill up living-room sized spaces with a hundred of the same item? The flourescent light bulbs flicker in a way that makes you want to look over your shoulder. The employees—fashionable teens, mostly—could be on zoloft. But maybe it’s just how you end up toward the end of a shift in a place with such an unnerving energy. There is another space in the store where it was a bunch of the same rug, “displayed” next to each other, one by one, flat on the floor. And hey, look over there, 60 of the same air fryers I already saw 100 of at the entrance!
