A99 AQUATA BREATHER - GETTING THE DETAILS RIGHT Some details we can ignore. But some, we just can’t. Especially when we get our hands on new reference material. And for us that means going back to the drawing table when something isn’t quite right! We had the metal mesh remade to match the original construction from the reference, this time with a folded seam instead of a welded seam. We are very happy with the change and have just received the new parts. So we are moving ahead with final assembly and expect to have everything ready for shipping in about 2-3 weeks. A99 AQUATA BREATHER – AN EXPLODED VIEW A highly “functional” prop. The prop makers at ILM were always masters at implied functionality. And the A99 Aquata Breather is a perfect example of this. The stainless steel mesh “filter”, the air “containers”, the working hinges and the polished white mouthpiece for comfortable use. Not many real-world parts were used on this prop. We were able to source the original hinges, heat shrink tubing and plastic screws. But for the other parts we had to painstakingly photo-match our 3D CAD work with the available reference to recreate the parts and their blemishes perfectly. We even had access to additional reference material from the owner of the real prop. This gave us this very dainty prop replica, easily one of our own new favorites standing next to the Jedi Communicator. In order to make the wrist com feel “right” we had to meticulously replicate the wonkiness of the vacuum-formed body. It’s one of those times where you need to trust the process. Most of the detail in this prop is in the detail plate consisting of all model kit donor parts. We were able to ID all four and replicate the plate, including misalignment of the part and casting air bubbles. So, we have a fully ID-ed and wonky prop for you. And boy does the result feel right! ENDOR REBEL COMMANDO WRIST COMMUNICATOR THE REVENGE OF THE STRAP We’ve said it before: replicating any prop comes with its own unique challenges. Since this is our first release that required a new type of display, you’d think designing that would be the main hurdle. But you’d be wrong. The biggest challenge on the Rebel Wrist Communicator? The strap! There are plenty of readily available elastic bands. On the original prop, the strap had a very distinct tight weave on the back, large fluffy loops on the front and a tight wrap-around on the sides. And no such straps are made (anymore). So, what did we do? We worked vigorously with a custom weaving company, going over all the requirements of the strap. Four test attempts later: we got what we wanted. The strap fits the prop beautifully and really gives that slightly rough, vintage and almost handmade feel. Fully elastic and accurately colored. And we wouldn’t be “us” if we didn’t include the handwritten production notes on the back of each strap. This unique wrist-worn device, worn by the rebel strike team tasked with taking out the empire’s shield generator on Endor, is a signature assembly of vacuum formed parts and various model kit donors that give it its Star Wars look. This prop replica and all its wonky goodness was carefully recreated using correct period kit parts, includes a custom woven elastic band and was hand finished with paint, weathering and handwritten production notes on the back of each piece.
