Before a café collection shape ever reaches the kiln, it passes through Handle Town. ☕
We start by extruding the clay. This means pressing it through a narrow opening so it emerges in long, soft ropes that become the starting points for every handle.
From there, each one is cut into shorter pieces, and shaped into a handle by hand. The final length and curve of the handle is determined by the proportions of the piece it’s meant for.
In the mornings, our team member Lori (@loriperbeckstudio ) leads Handle Town.

Lori Perbeck is a photographer working in New York City. In addition to her personal and freelance projects, she has been a photo editor at many national publications. She has a BFA from the University of Bridgeport and a certificate from the CE Track Program at the International Center of Photography. Rooted in the poetics of impermanence, her still life photographs are tender meditations on the beauty found in fleeting moments.

About The Salon
Artist and educator, Janelle Lynch founded The Salon in her Long Island City studio in 2015 and relaunched it virtually in 2021. In 2023, The Salon celebrated with an exhibition at Foley Gallery in New York City and a book, Welcome to The Salon, published by Tonal Editions.
Now in its tenth year, The Salon has grown to over 30 members in the US and abroad. Members meet online in a supportive environment to discuss the creative process, photography-related texts, artistic and cultural references, and to share work for constructive feedback.
