Cherry blossoms are one of my favorite flowers to tattoo. I associate them with Portland and appreciate what they symbolize in Japanese culture…the overwhelming beauty and violence of life together with its transience and fragility. Winter can be hard but it’s easier to embrace the dark, cold time of year knowing that on the other side of it I will get to walk the streets of Portland marveling at these delicate pink blooms once again.

I’m celebrating 12 years of tattooing this week and the opening of my own studio, Three Hounds Tattoo.
I’ve poured so much into imagining how I could build the most peaceful and creatively supportive space for myself and my clients, and I hope everyone who visits can feel it.
Immense gratitude to friends who have showed up for me and to my rock steady, problem solver extraordinaire partner @ryancooperthompson for supporting me every step of the way.

Peak chaos of buildout isn’t pictured bc I wouldn’t have been able to find or touch my phone but I did manage to capture the time I spilled 3/4 gal of paint in a tiny bathroom wherein I was trapped by a ladder and paint soaked socks and shoes.

For the past four years, Icon has been so much more than a tattoo shop to me. The moment you walk through the doors, you can feel the magic. It’s in the walls, in every paint stroke and object chosen to adorn surfaces. Most of all it’s exuded from the people housed within, and those who visit to collect a token of that magic to wear.
Icon made Portland feel like home to me, and gave me the stable foundation I needed to evolve into better and better versions of myself.
I’ve never felt so welcome and LOVED by coworkers, and I’ve been able to grow immeasurably in this supportive environment. I can’t overstate the value of my residency in this shop. I’m a stronger tattooer and person because of the foundation and relationships I found here. I’ll never be the same and that value cannot be lost or stolen.
Although my residency in this magic space has come to an end, I am so glad I don’t have to say goodbye, because I know I will continue to be shown the warmth and welcome Icon is famous for.

Last tattoo of 2025, for Anna. And boy am I proud of it…for a good chunk of the year I could physically only tattoo small pieces, no more than a couple hours a day a few days a week if at all. So happy to be fully back to kicking ass. Do your physical therapy, it works. Thank you all for supporting me through this rollercoaster of a year.
