Loretta Chin

As a buyer, Loretta Chin is a problem solver. Loretta loves being out in the world, seeing new collections, making new contacts and growing friendships with designers and suppliers. As an Assistant Costume Designer, she appreciates the team effort that goes into a costume department that has the goal of fulfilling a Costume Designer’s vision. Loretta also enjoys fitting actors as that’s when you see character magic happen. Loretta likes to think outside the box when it comes to the various roles she undertakes in costuming. Loretta is today’s Member Monday. Read more about her below: What was your first job or project in costuming? LC: As fashion writer, I styled for the pieces I wrote, back when print journalism ruled. I then moved on to commercials and landed my first job in costuming proper at Hemlock Grove, as a buyer for Costume Designer Mary Partridge. What is a project you're most proud of? LC: As a buyer, for Jett and Star Trek Discovery 3, I got a kick out seeing things appear on screen, either in their original state or frankensteined beyond recognition, respectively. As an Assistant Costume Designer for Glamorous and Original Fire, I enjoyed the interaction I had with the actors while fitting. What made you want to get into the career of costuming for film and television? LC: Mentoring by Costume Designers Antoinette Messam and Nancy Gould. They recognized the skills I had developed as a stylist as an asset to entering the world of long format. Favourite kit item? LC: Self-threading needles, my jewelry and tie collection. What is your favourite thing about the CAFTCAD community?
