Cologne-based composer and keyboardist Lorenz Rhode (
@lorenzrhode ) masterfully bridges electronic music with orchestral arrangements, leading a 15-piece ensemble featured weekly on a major German late-night talk show. Educated at the Robert Schumann Hochschule in Düsseldorf, his work blends electro-funk, house, 80s synth-pop, and nu-disco, all infused with a playful yet structured sensibility.
His live performances showcase his deep love for synthesizers. He owns a wide range of vintage gear, uses a talkbox, and improvises melodic lines rather than relying solely on samples. Beyond the stage, he contributes as a sound designer for the renowned synthesizer company Sequential, bringing his own voice to the very instruments he plays.
Releases on labels like Compost, Exploited, and Dirt Crew highlight his groove-heavy, nostalgic output. He has collaborated with artists such as Jamie Lidell and co-wrote music for the electronic duo Dam Swindle, contributing to their widely praised High Life album.
His role as musical director of the Rundfunk-Tanzorchester Ehrenfeld has earned critical acclaim-and even award nominations-for its unique fusion of retro orchestral grandeur and modern electronic flair. Driven by joy, structure, and improvisation, his craft consistently weaves together nostalgia and innovation.
Rhode is also one half of Sound Support, the duo he shares with Lars Dales (Dam Swindle), through which he has further shaped his distinctive, club-focused sound. This mix includes many of their tracks.
Enjoy!
