Conventional cycling shoes have long employed a fashionable tapered toe box, constraining the feet into a serially-produced shape that restricts the foot’s natural movement and circulation.
New wide and barefoot shoes can present an alternative. The problem is that the foot can often swim in a shoe that is too wide for the user, which in turn forces a negative nervous system reaction: the body is faced with the problem of trying to find grip both within the shoe AND with the ground itself. This facilitates over-engagement of stabilizer muscles— an inefficient use of energy and inefficient force transfer.
