Dance artist Alanna Kraaijeveld has worked in the contemporary dance milieu for twenty years as a performer, teacher, and artistic support. She teaches nationally, at professional dance training institutions, festivals, organisations. For several years, she has been hosting dialogic practice initiatives that happily assemble different practitioners, materials and disciplines. Examples include wrestling and voice work (Susanna Hood), judo and storytelling (Catherine Lalonde), clay sculpture and dance, approaches to improvisation with Yves Charuest. These channel her artistic inquiry and connect her with artists of different ages, experience and creativity. The practice ball is a tool I encountered in Fighting Monkey Practice. It is a ball on a string. It offers a dynamic context in which to align and make precise our technical work. It is also very playful, and so disrupts notions that play and serious work are different and separate ideas. These classes center as an approach to try or test, to share, and to support, all through dances with the practice ball. Collaboration – of our structures or bodies, with objects, with partners – is of value. The aim is to expand our physical capacity, nurture our elasticity, and release tension, move and explore with greater awareness of of how dynamic contexts unlock our ability, and support our development.

The only prerequisite is your desire to dive deep into the philosophy and practice of dance freestyle and improvisation, and your eagerness to develop trust and confidence in yourself and in others. In this workshop, Lu will guide participants through scores and practices from their new work The Conditions, a hybrid performance-exhibition conceived for an art gallery. By reaching into the sensory present, we will unfold fields of speech, sound, and movement. Inspired by Tarot and Micro-phenomenological interviewing, we will explore perception in the hazy zone between divination and improvisation, spilling across the floors and walls and prying open channels between the world and our subjective inner landscapes. The physicality of our emotions will be an anchor as we engage with the substances of our attention via somatic portals, hearkening back to our felt-connections to land. Cette semaine, nous avons également le plaisir d’accueillir Lucy M. May en résidence. 🌱À propos de l'artiste: Lucy M. May (elle/ielle) est une artiste en danse, née à Eqpahak/Wolastokuk (Fredericton) et basée à Tiohtiá:ke/Mooniyang (Montréal) depuis 2003. Ses projets chorégraphiques, présentés à travers le Canada, explorent la matérialité de l'attention humaine ainsi que nos relations aux lieux et à l'autre. L'improvisation occupe une place centrale dans son travail d'interprétation, de chorégraphie et d'enseignement, nourrie par ses expériences de performance avec des compagnies de danse contemporaine, en CHSLD, ainsi que par sa pratique du street dance Krump depuis 2018. Ielle battle sous l'alias Pluto. À travers le Canada, elle anime des ateliers et des cours pour des organismes tels que RQD, Artère, EDCM, Toronto Love-In, Studio 303, Kinetic Studio, Fluid Fest, DansEncorps, Empirical Freedom, Fada Dance et Gold Saucer. Intéressée par les méthodes alternatives de transmission des connaissances sur le mouvement, elle a co-créé les rassemblements communautaires Off_Script, Slaughterhaus et WIPSHOP. Ses études en interprétation ont été complétées à l'École de danse contemporaine de Montréal et à CODARTS | Rotterdamse Dansacademie. En tant qu'illustrateur, Lucy explore les liens entre la danse et les pratiques du dessin. 📸 Calope
