@hayleykwilson Kickflip to fakie for the Nike SB AF-1 The first day after I moved to Melbourne I went for a solo skate at Edinburgh Gardens skatepark, the park was otherwise empty apart from 1 person, none other than Hayley. Having moved from a town that seldom has a pro skater at the local park, if ever, bumping into a (soon to be pro) skater was awesome, I went over and said hi and explained I had just moved to try and do as much skate photography as possible, Hayley was very kind and welcomed me to Melbourne. Fast forward almost 500 days and I had the crazy opportunity to get some pictures for the upcoming AF-1 SB release. Along with that I was lucky enough to design a last minute poster to go on display at the Swanston st Fast Times. Thx @hayleykwilson @geoffcampbell @fasttimes 🫶

@brad.saunders FS50-50 transfer. Thrifted novelty frame. When Brad and I went back to shoot this pic, there was this huge shadow cutting the spot right in half, and because of the way the sun was setting it was going to slowly inch its way along the spot for at least a good hour, so with other plans crunching the time, waiting would not be in option. Instead, I moved my car to the other side of the street, stood ontop of the roof and lined myself up with the shadow, which created this cool visual effect of half light and half dark, which is kind of reminiscent of discovering flashes don’t work over 1/250 without high speed sync. Some sneaky hidden lighting and alot of patience from Brad, we got the zult šŸ™ go watch his new part which features this trick immediately 😈

@ostlik - FS 180, Fakie manual, Fakie flip. ā€œThere are cathedrals everywhere for those with the eyes to seeā€ - Henri Matisse shooting manuals can be an annoying task, and shooting sequences is a dying medium, but with this trick I knew there was no other way. The day we shot this, @e.d.c.w released the long awaited scene video from my hometown ā€œstained glassā€ and I was riding the high of everyone seeing me sack a rail and frontflip onto my head, so stained glass was on my mind. This spot happened to have loads of beautiful coloured glass on this exterior facade, and my initial attempts at the sequence really weren’t hitting, so with the glass in mind I took the path less travelled and got amongst the glass and after a lengthy and sweaty battle, Petey stomped this one on home. This was the first physical collage I did after buying my cheap printer on facebook marketplace, and the double sided tape I bought turned out to be really thick, which meant when I scanned it there a small drop shadows from each section, and I can credit this collage for really sparking physical manipulation in photography for me

@brad.saunders Backside NB, fish & long, long published as introduction photo in Slam #249 This process was inspired by a book I had as a kid with the paper flashlight illusion, which uses a transparency set upon a darker background, and then a moveable flashlight that you can slide inbetween the 2 to clearly show the image printed on the transparency. shooting this picture was challenging because the background was so cluttered and light when we were at the spot, and to shoot it at a low aperture to try blow out the background would’ve required standing on the busy tram tracks, so instead I pumped up the lights to try and stop down the ambient light but it could only go so far. And so that brings us to post processing where a quite honestly genius kids book idea that never seemed to have gotten enough credit as it should have saves the day.

@fullartron FS Noseblunt at Town Hall When Max came to me with the idea to shoot his New Gen completely on film I knew this was a great opportunity to shoot a skate picture on Hasselblad, just like Atiba and Blabac etc. did before we had the luxury of digital censors. I’ve had my 500c/m for just over a year and a half now and never been brave enough to take it out to shoot skating in the streets. When Max first told me about this trick I immediately imagined it as a fisheye picture, but when we got to the spot I was struck by this beautiful black marble wall, both as a backdrop for the trick and the shadow it cast, and it framed the spot in such a way I would kick myself if I didn’t get a frame utilising it. Thankfully, Max was down for the cause and hopped on the noseblunt 6 or 7 times, hoping and praying that I got a useable frame. As a safety measure, we also shot the fisheye picture on 35mm, but to my luck both produced great results and they got ran together on opposing pages of his new gen. Also seen here in this post are some lifestyle shots we got for the New Gen plus another skate shot of Kickflip Back Lip. Super grateful and a dream come true getting a Hasselblad picture in print. This spot now has a huge bright pink vinyl sticker spanning this marble facade so i’m glad we got this when we did. check out Max’s full new gen, available now in Slam #249!

@devil___city FS 180 at Barts. Another exploration into the cyanotype process. Here I printed the original image, treated it with the cyanotype solution, and then exposed it using the suns UV rays through a transparent negative of the same image. The inherent softening on the original image through the liquid formula and the sharpness of the UV printing created a really cool ghosting effect around the edges that I really loved. selectively washing off the solution after exposure also left a cool splash halo at the top which I think framed the trick nicely. background detail is unfortunately lost because I haven’t honed the timing of the exposure in the sun, but if anything it helped isolate the skater from the background. swipe for the original image + details :)
