We are proud to have sponsored the Epro8 Hamilton heats last week. These school students stepped up to the challenge - designing, building, testing, and problem solving under pressure. It was great to see their teamwork and thinking across every round. Backing events like Epro8 allows more rangatahi to explore STEM (science, technology, engineering & mathematics) in a practical way and see where it can take them. The standard was high, and the energy in the room captured what happens when students engage with engineering in a hands-on way. Congratulations to the winners, and to all teams that took part.

We are delighted to announce the four finalists of the inaugural Collin Post Sculpture Award! Fine Arts students Aime Chao, Caixia Tan, Sophie Drury and Brittany Walker Smith will now embark on the next steps to bring their concepts to life.   This Award is a unique opportunity for Elam students to design, develop and publicly exhibit an outdoor sculpture in partnership with @uapcompany , @longveld and @deborahmccormickconsulting . The successful student will undertake a residency with UAP in Brisbane to develop a digital model of the sculpture before it is constructed in Hamilton by Longveld.   The winner will be announced in late May and we cannot wait to see which student’s sculpture will publicly take situ on campus - stay tuned!

Matt and Rena have joined us recently through the Earn As You Learn programme, getting started in the workshop and learning alongside our team. Through EAYL they are building practical skills by being involved in real projects while working toward a qualification in manufacturing. We believe supporting young people into the trades is important. It helps secure the future of our industry by making a meaningful contribution into building the next generation of skilled tradespeople.

This week we welcomed the Consul General of India, Dr. Madan Mohan Sethi, and Mr. Anil Kumar Singh, Commercial Officer, to Longveld.Together, we toured our workshops and shared how we engineer and deliver complex stainless steel solutions from right here in New Zealand to projects around the world. It was an open, practical discussion - from fabrication on the floor to the broader forces shaping international trade. We also explored what the free trade agreement between New Zealand and India could mean for businesses and communities in both countries. Stronger trade pathways create opportunity: for innovation, for skilled jobs, and for deeper collaboration between two growing economies.Partnerships like these help build lasting connections, and open the door to new possibilities. Thank you to Dr. Sethi and Mr. Singh for the conversation and for taking the time to see our work up close.

We’ve just completed and installed Puna Whakareia, a new artwork by Henriata Nicholas, crafted from stainless steel with varying types of polished finishes to achieve the desired look, and spanning 4.3m x 3.2m. Inspired by the traditional tāniko artform, its layered patterns reflect kaitiakitanga, Waipā landforms, and the many expressions of wai. • Background layer – representing kaitiakitanga and our responsibility to te taiao, carrying the legacy of future generations. • Central diamond pattern depicts land formations and their locations within the Waipā. • Smaller tapatoru – expressing the many aspects of wai: rivers, lakes, and the waters that rise from Papatūānuku and fall from Ranginui. Together, these elements demonstrate the deep relationship mana whenua holds with the whenua and its tributaries. Puna speaks to the shared well of knowledge that shapes the Annex and those who work within it. Whakareia reflects the excellence of artistry and service held by the Museum team. This artwork carries the blessing of Dr Tom Roa and Shane Te Ruki. Thoughtfully engineered and brought to life with the utmost care, it is a remarkable piece.

This week we celebrated Atu, who received an Unsung Hero Award for the way he quietly goes about completing remarkable work, day after day. Atu is steady, skilled and always focused on doing his best. From his precise work on the brake press to the way he has embraced digital QA systems, he shows everyone what dedication looks like. He is also a patient and willing teacher, often found imparting his knowledge to help others improve their skills. After nearly 18 years with Longveld, his commitment still sets a very high standard. Thanks, Atu.

We had a great week hosting a group of Year 11 students from the Waikato Trades Academy. They’re all studying towards their Level 2 Mechanical Engineering certificate, and got to see what that looks like in action here at Longveld. From getting hands-on in the workshop to chatting with our team about how they got started in engineering, they brought curiosity, focus, and a lot of good questions. It’s always great seeing young women exploring what’s possible in this industry. We hope the experience sparked a few new ideas for their next steps.
