#JusticeForKabwe protests in London and Zambia on day of @angloamericanplc AGM
As mining giant Anglo American held its AGM in London on 29 April 2026, coordinated protests took place in London and Zambia about the company's devastating legacy in Kabwe, one of the world’s most polluted towns, while shareholder activists questioned them during the meeting.
Lead pollution in Kabwe is over 300 times the level considered a hazard by the Environmental Protection Agency. 95% of children have elevated blood lead levels. This is due to mining by an Anglo-operated mine which starting during colonial times.
Over 50 people in Kabwe, led by @environmentafricazambia , gathered to call for Stop Anglo’s toxic legacy’ and ‘Justice Delayed is Justice Denied’, in a march past that engaged the local mayor and the Town clek’s representative.
In London, outside the mining giant’s AGM, people gathered to call for ‘Justice for Kabwe’ and ‘Anglo American, do the right thing’.
During the AGM, ACTSA as a proxy shareholder challenged the company about Kabwe. Anglo has left a devastating legacy in Southern Africa - in Kabwe it must clean up its mess and live up to its promises to contribute to a remedy where it has caused harm.

Ahead of Rio Tinto’s AGM tomorrow, communities under threat from its mining operations in Mongolia, Serbia, Madagascar and Arizona are raising their voices and demanding meaningful responses from Rio Tinto on the issues they have repeatedly raised - water pollution and waste at the Oyu Tolgoi copper-gold mine in Mongolia - a litany of environmental and social concerns at the QMM ilmenite mine in Madagascar - the existential threat of lithium mining for the valley of River Jadar in Serbia - plans to destroy the sacred site and ecological haven of Oak Flat to build a copper mine in Arizona.
Tomorrow we demand real responses to our concerns. Hands off our rivers!
