Sometimes there’s an overpowering urge to shock the system. When we came off the road from the last album cycle, we discussed wanting to change up the way approached the next “thing”. We didn’t want to put anymore weight behind it, so “thing” seemed like the right way to categorize it. We’ve been getting together over the last few months with zero plans, zero ideas, and the hopes of achieving something new and fresh together. In the same room…
We’ve spent the time treating this approach like a band who has only ever played shows together. Think of a band in high school, no expectations, no past albums that anyone has ever heard, and no idea off the table. We’ve had a lot of fun and have been documenting these sessions with just an iPhone microphone. We’ve set a strict no demo policy. This means not a single recording on a computer, where we can edit, overanalyze or butcher to death (we have the tendency to do so!), before we ever press record for real. Capture the spark.
Since we’ve started, we’ve taken a few of these ideas into a studio, but I’ve been thinking how cool it would be to get out and share them live first…. Let’s see how it feels, with you all in the room. I remember so many times hearing a band rip through a new song and waiting months to be able to find it on their next release. This is something we’ve never done before, so it needs to happen.
