At this stage, the work included: - site layout / transfer - elevation control - excavation prep - footing setup - reinforcing placement - dowel coordination - sump and drainage planning - footing pour - wall layout - ICF assembly - reinforcing within the wall - bracing, plumbing, and alignment Day 1 was focused on the fastfoot Day 2 was focused on transferring new addition dimensions into the ICF wall system If footing geometry, elevations, or reinforcing are off, the wall stage becomes slower, harder, and less precise. When the early steps are done well, the rest of the work can move efficiently so make sure that’s done correctly Foundation work is a good example of how construction speed is often created by preparation, sequencing, and repetition rather than rushing even when it may feel rushed A short reel can show the transformation The real value is in understanding everything required to make that transformation work Start with a good understanding of your blocks, elevations, building dimensions, and plans. Passive House Series Part 2B🏡🏠 What challenges arose during the transition from the below-grade to above-grade air barrier? The biggest challenge was the cold joint between pours. 💯 ICF walls are built in lifts, so where one pour cures and the next begins, that joint becomes a critical point, especially in Passive House construction, where it’s part of the air barrier. Proper vibration and consolidation during the next pour ensure a tight, continuous bond. But winter added another layer, ice formed right at the joint, exactly where the next lift needed to connect. The solution was simple: heat it, clear it, then pour. Because if that ice melts later, it leaves voids and compromises both structure and airtightness. High-performance builds come down to getting these moments right. Passive House Series Part 2A🏠🏡 One of the biggest challenges in high-performance construction is maintaining a continuous air control layer, especially at the transition between the foundation and above-grade walls. In this build, @borrenbuilders bypassed that complication entirely.
