Besides music iykyk how much I love fighting games. I was invited to attend as an exhibitor at EVO Las Vegas this past weekend and I also wanted to compete so Iāve kinda ducked off and trained for a few months to make this happen. Got to meet & fight the legend Justin Wong (took a round off of him in Tekken šŖšæ) and witness the largest and probably the last MVC2 tournament on the EVO main stage. Played some of the upcoming Marvel Tokon and Invincible Vsā Amazing experience! Iāll never miss a year of EVO again š

On another note- Admittedly Iāve never really used the SP much. I always been a software guy. Iāve used a 202 & 303 briefly through the years but the workflow was always a little complicated for me but I recently got a sp404 mk2 a few weeks ago and Iāve been learning so much and incorporating into my workflow. I think my favorite feature is the looper- I love sketching ideas and assigning it to pads. Hereās my first few tracks i was able to make solely on the 404.

Dilla is so engrained within the beat community (Iād say the entire music industry imo) itās hard not to make beats and not think about him. I think about how deceptively complex his beats could be; like how his kicks would constantly change pattern or he would sneak in extra chop of a sample in something you thought was a loop. You never really think about these things until you tried them yourself and itās not easy!

Someone recently asked me how to break out of a 4-bar loopāhereās an example: the riff, bass line and drums are only 2 bars. All it takes is one element and let it evolve. In this case, itās a shifting chord progression/lead, but you can apply this to anythingāyour bassline, a riff, or even percussion.
Even if itās just 1-2 bars, as long as something is changing rhythmically or harmonically, it can transform a loop into a song. This goes for samples too.
