„Familie ist, woran man sich reiben kann. Egal, wo sie ist.“ (Benjamin von Wyl)
How have our very first relationships shaped us and formed our identity? How do we remember them? How do they make us feel? These are questions to which the artists in the exhibition *Family Crinkles* offer various answers, pose even more questions, and present viewers with thought-provoking ideas.
The theme of how we live within social constellations and their rules and norms affects everyone. Do familial structures foster relationships of trust and mutually supportive communities, or do their members lose touch, live side by side, drift apart, or cease all contact? “A functional family is the healthy breeding ground on which people can develop.” (bell hooks) Self-respect is learned; autonomy and dependence are in harmony. Often, however, these are constantly being renegotiated.
Most often, the concept of ambivalence captures this feeling we associate with the term ‘family’.
