On October 18, 1984 Michael Jordan debuted his red-and-black Nike Air Ship; later to become the Air Jordan 1. The colour violated regulations because they were mostly black and red.
Following on in February 85, the NBA famously sent a letter to Nike warning that Jordan would be fined $5,000 for each game he wore the âBannedâ Footwear.
Nike paid these fines, turning the âBannedâ into a massively successful marketing campaign which paved the way, shifting basketball culture and paving the way for athletes to express their individuality.
