I sang this just after recording the guitar and kept the quiescent quality because it was things I could only whisper to myself.
Written after taking a synthetic psychedelic for the first time in 20 years. A difficult trip in New Orleans Had kept me away since that visions of blood in a soil and roots of audubon park.
This time in Santa Gertrudis Ibiza, immersed in the sunset, very sensitive to light. I could feel the psychological chessboard this compound elicits.
Not a true path but helpful for sensing the geometric proportions of one’s societal mask.
The song deals with searching for balance within one’s own polarity.
The cello as a psychic body I’m trying to release: family baggage, self, scars—hoping to mourn, grieve, carry and ultimately bury.

This song hurts.
Written 5 years ago about transcendence, loss, and choosing to make something sacred. I first played it to a stranger who became a friend, and lockdown isolation gave it deeper meaning.
The mountains of Asturias captured this feeling of phases of time.
The reverse running carries a Taoist idea about reversal as a way forward and qi returning.
This was supposed to release a year ago, but Nettwerk Music Group rejected my album 10 days before this single dropped - citing “graphic lyrics” they never specified, after their A&R had praised explicit tracks on the same album months earlier. I kept the entire advance, got my masters back, refused their termination agreement with a highly restrictive confidentiality clause that functioned as an NDA.
After surviving a violent assault that affected my ability to play strings, I’ve found my voice through the very sacrifices the song explores - the decisions to make something sacred. What’s sacred to me is the language of music.

They tried to censor the work. They tried to separate me from it using every tactic available.
6 emails showing systematic creative control:
• “Simon and I alone decide what content” - authoritarian creative control
• Album art dismissed (this became a huge fight, probably why Baz Luhrmann took a deeper listen)
• Track listing changed after I’d already compromised by removing Bach invention
• Phone call urging me to bury “You’re The One That I Want” - they didn’t think it was “cool,” it was always the first song
• Middle eight compared to “beautiful woman who shaves her head to make a point” - misogynistic dismissal
• Cancer lyric removal - even syllable timing micromanaged despite my meticulous craft
• Simon confirming he also wants it off, inventing reasons to speed up my delivery
All this stuff just breaks my heart to have to continue to dredge up. I asked Nabil Ayers (CC’d on most chains) for a phone call with Martin Mills to navigate this - they haven’t replied to the email I sent. This is completely at odds with what their ethos purports to be and I’m calling bullshit on their whole sorry organization.
