This pretty picture captures the hues of Spring! E. coli bacteria (pink) and extracellular matrix (green) are imaged in bladder organoids by scanning electron microscopy. What do you see? A fish? In reality, this image represents developmental state transitions of the social amoeba, Dictyostelium, each blue dot representing a single cell. Individual cells differentiate after starvation, eventually becoming a structure made up of a stalk and spores. Science or Art? This stunning movie represents a simulation of wound healing in the wing disc of a fruit fly (Drosophila). Reshaping of the cells in this tissue to repair the wound was revealed by biophysical modelling. This beautiful image is of a dorsal root ganglion - that is, a cluster of neurons (a ganglion) found in the dorsal root of an L5 spinal nerve. The image shows a mosaic of neuronal subtypes and their surrounding satellite glia, each pseudo-coloured in a different hue (NF, orange; P2X3, blue; PLP-eGFP). Another image that would make a great print on fabric! Endothelial cells line all blood vessels and regulate exchanges between the bloodstream and the surrounding tissues. They play an important role in peripheral nerve regeneration by increasing the blood supply to peripheral nerves after injury. This video shows a 3D reconstruction of a blood vessel from the endoneurium of a mouse sciatic nerve, captured by electron microscopy. Endothelial cells are coloured red with other interacting cells individually coloured. Endothelial cells line all blood vessels and regulate exchanges between the bloodstream and the surrounding tissues. They play an important role in peripheral nerve regeneration by increasing the blood supply to peripheral nerves after injury. This video shows an #Imaris 3D reconstruction of a single blood vessel of the sciatic nerve. Endothelial cells (purple), pericytes (orange), macrophages, (blue) and tactocytes (grey) show the degree of cellular interactions along the blood vessel. Researchers want to quantify the relationship between immune cells and fibroblasts, as the lymph node swells during an immune response. The fibroblasts are the source of survival factors (IL-7) and also support immune cell migration through the tissue. In this image, the proximity of immune cells to their supportive tissue structures in lymph nodes - which are formed of specialized fibroblasts - is mapped. Distance data is colour-coded, red is close enough to touch the fibroblast network, blue is further away. 1970s inspired? Researchers used microscopy imaging and mathematical modelling to understand how signalling dynamics in the tissue are shaped by signalling centres. Here they are monitoring spiral waves of cAMP - an intracellular signalling molecule important for many biological processes. This beautiful movie shows gene transcription in single cells over tissue scales. Arrow shows a Dicty cell transcribing the cAMP receptor gene. The movie zooms out to show the dynamic niche context of the cell with the stem cell zone (left) and differentiating zone (right). Beautiful imaging by the Chubb Lab. Not all signalling gradients are exponentials. Dicty cells (green nuclei) migrate towards their food source, bacteria (white), concentrating the signal (bacteria) at the front and redistributing it to the rear. Side view captured using a 3i diSPIM microscope. This beautiful image is part of a new study published in Nature Immunology by the @actonlab . The team used a multi-disciplinary approach using biophysical and immune assays in ex vivo and in vivo tissues to show that the fibroblastic cellular network (FCN) of the lymph node is a mechanical balancing act. It responds adaptively to immune challenge to support the ongoing immune response. FCN shown in yellow, T cells shown in blue.
