I have more plates in the air these days than ever, so it’s sometimes hard to carve out time to train for the Dipsea Race (June 14th).
SO—I’ve got a big garden planted this this year, needing water every few days and I’ve been setting a timer for every 5 minutes to go out from the studio and move the hose around.
Epiphany! Why don’t I run instead of walking?
Here I’m trotting the 100’ or so to the greenhouse. Then back in the studio using the Versaclimber (to my fave music of the moment, Springsteen live with Chaka Khan, John Fogerty, Bonnie Raitt, doing Mustang Sally).
Hoping that by posting here, it’ll force me to keep doing this. My land is 100’ by 200’, so if I trot instead of walk I’ll get some conditioning (and get around faster).

Just posted my (infrequent, erratic) GIMME SHELTER newsletter on Substack. The Solo Life, Aging, A Night on the Beach, Artificial Intelligence, My Next Book (“Breaking Free in the ‘60s”), Stewart Brand’s New Book, and Environmentalism Has Become a Business, with a bit on the ongoing harm to organic food production and loss of jobs and homes caused in Marin County by the Environmental Action Committee.
Link in bio or do search for Substack and my name.
Look at this beauty!
The absolutely cutest animals in the world are baby skunks. They are perfect miniatures of grownups skunks, unlike say, baby horses or fauns.
Once there were 5 babies horsing around in the yard, knocking each other over, tumbling, wrestling with each other…
This guy then ambled over to the quail hole I cut in the gate, passed out.to the road….
My first book, a 12-page collage of a month-long hitchhiking trip across America in 1965 (which changed my life).
On my Substack today. See link in bio or Google my name plus Substack.
You can subscribe to my Substack platform for free.and you’ll get an email each time I do a post (about once a week).
Substack is my main form of communication these days.
Pic of me in 1959 with son Peter at about 3 months old at Sembach Air Base (near Kaiserslautern)), Germany. I was running the base newspaper, The Sembach Jet Gazette and Peter was born in Wiesbaden.
Our newspaper won an award for best paper on USAF that year. (I had changed it to tabloid format and included lots of photos.)
Unfortunately I’m a 2-fingered typist, and for years have had to correct run-together words from not hitting the space bar or hitting an “m” or ‘n” when intending a space. It was a constant hassle.
So recently a cut a small piece of 1/8th wood, allowing for an overlap. I attached it with YMHB (very strong) double-stick tape and voilá, no mas problemas.
Part of the problem for me for me is that space bars on keyboards are flush with other keys; with this setup, the space bar is not only elevated, but I can hit it farther out.

Not every beautiful home comes from a contractor, a mortgage, or a conventional plan. @lloyd.kahn ’s self-built home is proof that living well can look a whole lot different than what we’re taught to want. Built by hand, filled with character, and shaped by a life lived on his own terms. Watch the full episode with him on our YouTube | youtube.com/@portraitsofanotherlife
My dad did this drawing when he was at Lick-Wilmerding high school (then the California School of Mechanical Arts) in San Francisco in about 1917. In those days, Lick was known for its shops, “…to teach boys trades, fitting them to make a living with their hands…explicitly focused on building trades and architectural drafting.” -History of Lick Wilmerding
Three big events today:
1. Spring Equinox
2. Willie Brown’s birthday
3. Opening of brand-new Bay Bridge’s Lights by artist Leo Villareal, “…shimmering 1 .8-mile canvas of abstract, e@ver -changing white LED patterns that reveal what he calls ‘pulse of the place..’l”
An $11 million project completely funded by donors (no city $$). Years in the making.
Google “bold italic bay bridge lights” for good article.
Go to 14th $ Brannan at 6PM for a block party. Sculptures all over the place.
People can buy $200 tickets for what must be an enhanced experience (and to finance art).
Google it up.
See ya there.
