The past four years, to know me was to know Adelaide. Since the day we found each other, she has been my constant companion and my fiercest protector. She took care of me as much as I took care of her. Up until her last days, she stood between every little thing she thought could cause me harm – the mailwoman, bicycles, people wearing headlamps, the squirrel removal specialist, etc.
All that to say, to be loved by Addie was to be loved wholeheartedly. She loved a lot, but as you can tell, she didn’t love just anyone or anything (reference above list), making being chosen by her feel all the more special.
A month ago, under the full moon, I had to say goodbye. She was my favorite thing to exist in this world and now she is my favorite thing to exist beyond it <3
No amount of words could adequately express this dog’s impact on my life, so I’ll just leave you with four things I learned from her.
1. There’s nothing like a quick walk to clear your mind.
2. Never take the little moments for granted. The wind in your hair or the sun on your face. The sound of your loved one pulling into the driveway.
3. It doesn’t matter where you are or what you’re doing as long as you’re with the right people.
4. In this life, pain and love / joy and grief will find a funny way of coexisting. Let them become beautifully intertwined.
