Improving drainage and adding more green space can help prevent basement flooding. Make sure the ground slopes away from your home’s foundation, keep catch basins clear, and use plants and porous surfaces to soak up rainwater. This supports better irrigation and reduces stress on the sewer system during heavy rain. Learn more at toronto.ca/BasementFlooding

Under Toronto’s Energy & Water Reporting bylaw, owners of buildings 50,000 square feet and larger must submit their buildings’ energy and water use annually. The building sector accounts for more than half of the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in Toronto, mostly due to energy and water use, which can also represent some of the largest operating costs for building owners. We’ll use this data to compare the buildings’ performance, which will help owners to improve efficiency, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and cut costs. The deadline to report 2025 energy and water data is July 2. To learn more, visit www.toronto.ca/EWRB

#LoveLocal and feel the love at the Sorauren Farmers’ Market. 🍁 This unique market is one of the few in Toronto that’s open year round. And after spending the winter indoors at Henderson Brewery, the market heads back outdoors to Sorauren Avenue Park on May 4. Home to a wide range of local vendors, Sorauren Farmers’ Market offers everything from fresh produce to delicious prepared meals. You can also enjoy live music and kids’ activities while you shop. Supporting local markets like Sorauren helps small vendors succeed and strengthens community connections, while supporting sustainability by reducing transportation impacts and encouraging seasonal, locally sourced food. As the weather warms up, it’s the perfect time to get outside and share in the vibrant atmosphere with your neighbours. 💛 Open Mondays from 3 to 7 p.m. Follow @soraurenmarket to see what’s on each week! #LoveLocal 🍁

What looks like destruction is actually restoration. Black Oak savannahs, like those in High Park, are fire-dependent ecosystems. Without fire, they slowly disappear. For generations, Indigenous Peoples used controlled burns to care for this land, supporting plant growth, wildlife, and ecological balance. Today, traditional and prescribed burns are part of an ongoing effort to bring that relationship with the land back into practice. The City of Toronto is preparing for a burn in High Park and Lambton Park tomorrow, April 23. For more information visit toronto.ca/PrescribedBurn Descriptive video: Jaclyn, City of Toronto staff, is wearing a navy blue sweatshirt, jeans and boots outdoors in the urban forestry setting of High Park in Toronto. She walks us through an area of High Park that has trees, grasses and other plants not yet in bloom.

It’s Earth Day 🌍 We’re sharing ways big and small you can participate. Growing your green space can help pollinators, improve air quality and make areas cooler. For an easy way to help, try leaving your leaves or switching to electric garden tools for your landscaping. 🍂 You can also add native plants and shrubs to make it more welcoming to pollinators. Use our free Native Plant Tool to see what varieties would work best in your area. 🌱 If you’d like to add a tree to your property, we partner with LEAF to make the process easier for residents. 🌳 You can also visit one of our upcoming tree giveaways to receive a sapling at no cost for your property.
