This is just so cool! A new client has commissioned a "yakisugi" dining table, which is 400,000+ year old Japanese method of charring wood to improve weather resistance and all but eliminate the prospect insect infestations. This has been a "bucket list" build for me for a while. I've done some pieces like this in the past, but each build is very different so I'm working up a couple sample pieces to highlight different finishes and epoxy river types. One sample will entirely encase both slabs in clear epoxy and the other with will have a black mica powder river and then encase everything in clear epoxy. I've aleady poured the epoxy for the samples and they are curing now. I'll share more updates as the process unfolds. The Charleston Remodeling Expo is this weekend at the @CharlestonAreaConventionCenter . I'll be there to discuss all things river tables, custom design and client participation. You've seen and heard about this style for years, come on out and see them in person. Show hours are 10am - 6pm today and 11am - 4pm tomorrow.
The @charlottehomeshows is this weekend at The Park Expo Center in Charlotte, NC. I'm debuting two new pieces at this show..the St. Valentine River Table anx The Crimson Forks Table. Come the tables, and I'll just be sitting in the corner waiting to say hi!

I've been tinkering with red tinted epoxy in the shop recently and came up with these two beauties! You can see these spalted maple (left) and walnut (right) tables along with entry tables, wall art, desks, coffee tables and ocean scenes at the @charlottehomeshows event next weekend at the Park Expo and Convention Center.
