괴산에서 일주일 살기
오늘은 특별한 손님이 있었다. 우리가 올린 괴산 포스팅을 보고 여러 친구들이 관심을 보였는데, 서울에 사는 한 친구가 방문하고 싶다고 연락을 해왔다. 우리가 가장 좋았다고 생각한 쌍곡계곡으로 안내해 함께 시간을 보내기로 했다.
그런데 정말 놀란 일이 있었다. 주중에 우리가 경험했던 괴산과 주말의 괴산은 완전히 달랐다. 평화롭고 한가롭던 괴산이 주말이 되자, 도로는 차들로, 계곡은 사람들로 가득 찼다. 인기 있는 곳마다 발 디딜 틈이 없을 정도로 붐볐다. 나는 한국에서 여름휴가를 보내는 게 18년 만이라 이런 풍경은 예상하지 못했다. 친구들도 우리의 포스팅을 보고 ‘조용한 괴산’을 기대하고 왔을텐데, 이렇게 달라질 줄은 몰랐다.
그래도 실망보다는 즐거움이 더 컸다. 쌍곡계곡의 시원한 물에서 함께 신나는 물놀이도 하고, 사람들과 어울리며 주말의 활기찬 분위기도 느껴볼 수 있었다. 덕분에 우리만의 괴산 여행이 한층 더 다채로워진 것 같다.
이렇게 해서 우리의 괴산에서의 일주일 살기는 끝났다. 떠나기 아쉽지만, 괴산에서의 시간은 오래도록 우리 기억 속에 남을 것 같다.

Today was a special day - we had a visitor! After seeing our Goesan posts, friends reached out, curious about the place. One friend from Seoul messaged us, wanting to experience it with us. We decided to take them to Ssanggok Valley, our favourite spot from the trip.
But what surprised us the most was how different Goesan felt on the weekend compared to the weekdays we’d experienced. During the week, Goesan had been peaceful and quiet, but over the weekend, everything changed. Roads were packed with cars, the valleys were full of people, and every popular spot was crowded. I haven’t spent a summer in Korea in 18 years, so I never imagined a weekend like this. Our friends came expecting the peaceful Goesan from our posts, but they were just as surprised as we were.
Still, we made the best of it. We splashed around in the cool waters of Ssanggok Valley, joined the lively crowd, and enjoyed the vibrant energy of a busy summer weekend. In the end, it turned out to be a different kind of fun.
And just like that, our week-long stay in Goesan came to an end. It’s bittersweet to leave, but the memories we made here will stay with us for a long time. 🌿

괴산에서 일주일 살기
오늘은 화양구곡을 탐험하기로 했다.
도착하기 전부터 캠핑장이 길게 이어져 있었고, 그 옆으로 보이는 풍경이 참 예뻤다. 하지만 막상 계곡에 발을 담가보니, 우리가 기대했던 차갑고 시원한 물이 아닌 따뜻한 물이라 깜짝 놀랐다.
화양구곡은 속리산 국립공원에 있다. 입구에 차를 세워두고 셔틀버스를 탈 수도 있었지만, 우리는 걸어서 오르기로 했다. 날은 더웠지만, 울창한 나무 그늘 덕분에 충분히 걸을 만했다. 쌍곡계곡처럼 시원하게 수영을 하며 더위를 식힐 수 있을 거라 기대하며 걸음을 옮겼다.
그런데 계곡 곳곳에는 “수영금지” 표지판이 붙어 있어 조금 긴장됐지만, 다행히도 일시적으로 허용된 구간도 있었다. 그러나 아쉽게도 화양구곡의 물은 대부분 생각보다 미지근했다. 웅장한 산과 바위, 푸른 숲이 어우러진 풍경은 여전히 아름다웠지만, 문득 지구 온난화 때문일까 하는 아쉬움이 남았다. 계곡물이 예전처럼 차갑지 않다는 게 마음을 무겁게 했다.
그래도 허용된 곳에서 수영으로 더위를 식히고, 오늘의 하루를 마무리했다. 🌿

Today, we set out to explore Hwayang Valley (Hwayang-gugok).
Even before arriving, we passed long stretches of campsites along the road, framed by beautiful scenery. But when we finally dipped our feet into the stream, we were surprised—the water wasn’t the cool, refreshing mountain stream we imagined, but rather unexpectedly warm.
Hwayang Valley lies within Sokrisan National Park. We left our car at the entrance, where shuttle buses were available, but decided to hike up on foot. The day was hot, but thanks to the shade of the trees, the walk was manageable. We kept imagining a cool swim in the valley, just like at Ssanggok Valley, to beat the summer heat.
However, signs saying “No Swimming” were posted everywhere, which made us a little nervous. Thankfully, there were some designated spots where swimming was temporarily allowed. Still, most of the water in Hwayang Valley felt lukewarm rather than cold. The scenery—majestic mountains, rocks, and lush greenery—was breathtaking, yet I couldn’t help but feel a pang of sadness. Could this be another reminder of global warming? Streams that once ran icy cold now feel warm to the touch.
Even so, we cooled off for a while in the permitted area and ended the day, grateful for the experience. 🌿

오늘은 자연드림파크에서 ‘꼼지락’ 체험 프로그램에 참여했다.
이곳에는 ‘조물락’과 ‘꼼지락’, 두 가지 프로그램이 있는데, 요즘 야리가 향수에 한창 관심이 많아 고체 향수 만들기 클래스를 골랐다.
독일에서는 약 대신 허브 티를 처방해주는 일이 흔하다 보니, 우리 가족은 천연 허브와 과일에서 추출한 아로마로 몸과 마음을 다스리는 것에 익숙하다. 오늘 수업은 간단한 이론으로 시작해, 사용할 6가지 아로마의 성분과 효능에 대해 먼저 배웠다. 그리고 레시피에 따라 오일, 밀랍, 천연 방부제인 비타민 E, 아로마를 차례로 섞어 고체 향수를 완성했다.
강사님이 말하길, 내가 좋아하는 향과 싫어하는 향으로 현재 나의 상태를 알 수 있다고 한다. 신기하게도 우리 모두 비슷한 향을 골랐고, 알고 보니 이번 여행의 피로 때문인지 ‘밸런스 아로마’를 선택했다. 향을 맡는 것만으로도 마음이 편안해지고 몸까지 상쾌해지는 기분이었다.

Living a Week in Goesan
Today, we spent the day at Natural Dream Park, joining the “Kkomjirak” workshop - we chose the solid perfume-making class, mainly because Jari has been into perfumes lately.
In Germany, it’s common to be prescribed herbal teas instead of medicine, so our family is used to using natural aromas from herbs and fruits to balance the body and mind. The class began with a short theory session, where we learned about the properties and benefits of six different essential oils. Then, step by step, we mixed oil, beeswax, natural preservative vitamin E, and our chosen aromas to create our very own solid perfume.
The instructor explained that our scent preferences can reflect our current mental and physical state. Surprisingly, we all ended up choosing similar fragrances - turns out, after days of travelling, our bodies were craving “balance aromas” for recovery. Breathing in the scents during the class felt so refreshing and calming, almost like a reset for both body and mind.

괴산에서 일주일 살기
오늘은 쌍곡구곡을 다녀왔다.
네비에 쌍곡폭포를 찍고 갔는데, 입구가 사유지라 주차비 1만 원을 내야 했다. 탐방로를 따라 조금 올라가니 드디어 폭포가 보였다. 하지만 쌍곡폭포는 가까이 갈 수 없고 멀리서 눈으로만 감상하는 곳이었다. 아쉬웠지만 규칙을 따라야 하니 그대로 뒤돌아 나왔다.
대신 계곡을 따라 내려오다 보니 이야기가 달라졌다. 발밑으로 흐르는 물은 속까지 훤히 비칠 정도로 맑고 시원했고, 잠시 쉬어가니 더위는 금세 잊혀졌다. 집에 돌아오는길에 잠시 들린 소금강. ‘금강산과 꼭 닮았다’는 별명답게 기암절벽과 푸른 숲이 어우러진 풍경이 정말 멋졌다.
오늘도 자연 속에서 마음껏 쉬며 하루를 마무리했다. 🌿

Today, we explored Ssanggok Valley.
We set the GPS to Ssanggok Falls, but when we arrived, we found that the entrance was private property and had to pay a 10,000 KRW parking fee. Following the short trail, we reached the falls, but unfortunately, visitors aren’t allowed to get close. You can only admire it from a distance. It was a bit disappointing, but we respected the rules and moved on.
Walking back down along the valley, the scenery became even more beautiful. The stream was so clear that you could see straight to the bottom, and the cold water felt incredibly refreshing. Sitting by the water for a while, the summer heat quickly faded away. Further along, we stopped by Sogeumgang, a spot nicknamed “Little Geumgangsan” for its striking rock formations and lush greenery. The view was great.
We wrapped up the day feeling refreshed, surrounded by the beauty of nature. 🌿

수옥폭포 입구에는 넉넉한 주차장이 있었다. 차를 세우고 폭포까지 걸어 올라가는 길은 생각보다 멀지 않았다. 시원하게 떨어지는 폭포 앞에 서자 우리 모두 신이 났다. 그런데 아쉽게도 수영 및 물놀이 금지라는 현수막이 걸려 있었다. 발만 살짝 담그며 폭포를 즐겼다. 열기는 금세 식고, 기분도 한결 상쾌해졌다.
다시 힘을 낸 우리는 푸른 나무들이 만들어주는 그늘을 따라 수옥폭포길을 걸어갔다. 해가 잠시 구름 뒤로 숨은 틈새 사이로 불어오는 바람이 참 좋았다. ‘폭포 뒤에는 뭐가 있을까?’ 설레는 마음으로 조금 더 올라가 보니, 원풍저수지가 눈앞에 펼쳐졌다. 고요하고 멋진 풍경을 바라보며 한참을 쉬었다.
오늘도 꽉 찬 하루, 행복한 하루였다. 🌿

There was a spacious parking area at the entrance of Suok Falls. From there, the walk up to the waterfall wasn’t too far. Standing in front of the cool, cascading water instantly lifted our spirits. But to our disappointment, a big sign said “No Swimming or Playing in the Water.” So, we just dipped our feet into the stream and enjoyed the refreshing moment. The heat quickly faded, and we felt recharged.
With renewed energy, we followed the Suok Falls Trail, shaded by lush green trees. A gentle breeze brushed past us whenever the sun hid behind the clouds—it felt wonderful. Wondering what might lie beyond the waterfall, we climbed a little higher, and there it was: the stunning Wonpung Reservoir. The calm, open view was breathtaking, and we took our time soaking it all in.
Another beautiful, fulfilling day in Goesan. 🌿

오늘도 햇빛이 강했다.
오전 일정은 괴산 한지박물관에서 한지 만들기 체험. 이곳은 국가무형문화재 한지장 선생님이 계신 곳이라고 한다. 접수할 때 여쭤봤더니, 마침 밖에서 물을 뿌리던 어르신이 바로 그분이었다.
박물관 입구에는 닥나무 껍질이 햇볕 아래 널려 있었고, 안으로 들어서자 귀여운 강아지가 먼저 달려와 반겨줬다 🐶.
오늘 우리가 배운 건 꽃을 넣어 두 장의 한지를 겹쳐 말리는 기법. 선생님 말씀대로 뒷마당에 가서 직접 꽃을 따왔다. 아까 우리를 반기던 강아지가 앞장서서 따라오는데, 그 모습이 참 인상 깊었다. 그리고 본격적인 체험이 시작됐다. 닥나무 섬유와 풀이 섞인 원료를 떠내고, 물기를 빼고, 말리는 과정을 차근차근 경험했다.
한지가 마르는 동안 전시관을 둘러봤다. 한지의 재료와 제작 과정, 그리고 다양한 쓰임새까지 전시돼 있어 흥미로웠다. 돌아와 보니 우리가 만든 한지가 잘 말라 하나의 작품처럼 완성돼 있었다. 짧지만 알찬 경험이었다.

The sun was blazing again today.
In the morning, we joined a traditional Hanji (Korean paper) making workshop at the Goesan Hanji Museum. This place is home to a master craftsman, recognised as an Important Intangible Cultural Heritage holder. When I asked about him at the reception, they pointed to the elderly man outside sprinkling water. That was him.
At the entrance, mulberry tree bark was laid out under the sun to dry, and as soon as we stepped inside, a cute dog ran up to greet us 🐶.
Today’s lesson was a technique of layering two sheets of paper with pressed flowers in between. Following the master’s instructions, we went out to the back garden to pick flowers. The little dog from earlier even trotted ahead of us, as if guiding the way. Soon after, the workshop began: scooping the mulberry fibre mixed with paste, draining the water, and setting it out to dry.
While the sheets dried, we explored the museum exhibits. They showed the materials, the paper-making process, and the many uses of Hanji. It was fascinating. By the time we returned, our own handmade Hanji had dried beautifully, turning into a small piece of art. Short but meaningful, it was a truly memorable experience.

괴산에서 일주일 살기
일몰 예정 시간은 오후 7시 16분. 7시를 조금 넘겨 불빛공원에 도착했는데, 가로등만 하나둘 켜지고 공원은 깜깜… 평일이라 안 켜지나? 하는 순간, “7시 30분까지만 기다려보자!” 하고 시간을 정했다.
그리고 정확히 7시 30분! ✨
순간 공원이 환하게 빛나자 우리 모두 환호성을 질렀다. 싱가포르 슈퍼트리 못지않은 화려한 조명, 반짝이는 불빛과 흥겨운 음악이 흐르는 다리, 그리고 그 옆으로 이어지는 오천 자전거길까지. 괴산의 첫날 밤은 생각보다 훨씬 괜찮았다.

Sunset was expected at 7:16 pm. We arrived at Bulbit Park just after 7, only to find the streetlights slowly coming on while the park itself stayed dark.
Maybe it doesn’t light up on weekdays? we wondered. So we told ourselves: “Let’s wait until 7:30.”
And then, exactly at 7:30 ✨
The whole park lit up at once, and we burst into cheers! The dazzling lights were no less stunning than Singapore’s Supertrees, with a sparkling bridge playing lively music and the Ocheon Bike Trail stretching quietly beside it. Goesan’s night turned out to be more magical than we imagined.

조금은 일찍 도착한 불빛공원에 아직 빛이 들어오지 않아 주변을 산책하다 우연히 찾은 애한정. 연중무휴로 상시 개방되어 늦은 오후에도 편하게, 무료로 관람 가능했다. 우리는 마치 과거로 돌아간 듯 상상하며 곳곳을 거닐었다.

We arrived a little early at Bulbit Park, before the lights came on, so we took a walk around and happened to discover Aehanjeong Pavilion. It’s open year-round, free of charge, and easy to visit even in the late afternoon. As we strolled through the site, we imagined ourselves stepping back into the past.
