Today, we met up to plan season 10 of ‘Small Ways to Live Well’ podcast by @simplethingsmag , which has now had a quarter of a million downloads since we started nattering two years ago and has over 13,000 subscribers!
We met in the old kitchen at @mottisfontnt , with its gorgeous cherry blossoms, enormous ancient trees and clear chalk streams.
The eldest did good. Now the proud owner of a degree in forensic science. She hasn’t always found studying easy but she got there and is now a step closer to her dream job. We are beyond proud of her. #bugraduate #classof2025🎓📚✏️
Joined a turtle nest survey for the evening: on a Kefalonia beach @wildlifesense monitor and protect loggerhead turtle nests. These were hatchlings that hadn’t made it out of the nest yet so they got a helping hand. Their slow, vulnerable progress down a 12-metre long trench to the sea helps sets their magnetic compass. If and when they mature after 25 years or so in the open ocean they will return here to nest. Seeing these tiny creatures swim into the ocean is magical but brings out every protective feeling you have. Or maybe it’s just me - my daughter’s first word was turtle and my screensaver is a painting she made of two turtles for her first fine art degree piece. Bon voyage little turtles. Hope you make it back.
Kefalonian alarm clock - at sunrise and sunset, the local goat herd passes below our villa in the hills. Quite a contrast to the beach resort below; crumbling terraces that were once cultivated and there’s the remains of a church. The earthquake that destroyed most structures in the south of the island was some 70 years ago in 1953 but some villages were never rebuilt. The ancient olive trees have lived on through it all. #oldskalakefalonia
My attempt at an educational reel at Grenen, Skagen - the most northerly point of Denmark. The wind takes away most of my info but to the left of the shot is Skagerrak, part of the North Sea and to the right is Kattegat, in the Baltic Sea. The waves and spray are the meeting point of the two seas. Current here is way too dangerous for swimming but you can stand (as demonstrated) with a foot in both. At 6pm on a Wednesday @davidp_posts and I were the only people there. Feels like both the end of the world and the heart of Scandinavia. Needless to say this geographically significant place appealed to me v much and I loved it. Top day.
Good fun at #goodwuff. Florence had a tarot reading that offered a whole new understanding of our lovable, sensitive dog who often makes her likes and dislikes quite clear. A go at agility (not bad actually), dog massage (middling interest) the 25m dash (fairly speedy) and much wandering about greeting dogs and people with me and @davidp_posts on a sunny day on the always beautiful Goodwood estate. Oh and Hugh Bonneville and Clare Balding. A grand day out.
