Great fun last night at the spring Baylor Percussion Group concert feat. Xenakis, Higdon, Lansky, Torke, and our very own @danielwebbon 💚💛. Bravi tutti on bringing this show together, especially over the past few weeks. Forever grateful to our wonderful students and my partner in (percussive) crime, @arloshultis !!

HUGE announcement: @ethanhall_percussion and I are extremely excited to launch a consortium for a brand new vibraphone + marimba solo!
A very special thank you to @liquidrum for publishing the work and for the continued guidance throughout the process!
For more info and access to the consortium contract, check the link in my bio or message me. Super cool trailer in another post👀
Fabulous day with @ztaylordavis@adam_davis_music and their wonderful @twumusic percussion students, culminating in a terrific concert last day! Always rewarding to work with an incredible former student like Taylor and so appreciative for a few other @baylorperc alums (@kobchow and @crawfordpercussion ) showing up to support. Bravi tutti!!!
Here’s the middle section of Feast or Famine, an ever flowing stream of 6s that are sometimes in note groupings of 3s and sometimes in 4s…and then sometimes the rhythm leans forwards into 7s but still also present in note groupings of 3s or 4s. Then decays into 5s, 4s, and 3s at the end. I mostly remember what to do throughout this section until I don’t. Like all “easier” sections of larger works we play, it’s common that we don’t practice material like this enough because we’re more worried about the more challenging fireworks in other moments of the piece. Anyway, trying not to fall victim to that tendency…
Performance early next week at @txwomans with @ztaylordavis studio!
With performance no. 1 of @girlcomposer ’s Feast or Famine on the near horizon next week I’m pivoting to linking bigger chunks together. This represents about the first quarter of the piece. Still some clunkers and a few misfires but largely things feeling ok for the old guy behind the wheel. Plus, with enough sniffs and kicks it’ll be an A+ marimba performance 🔥🕺🏻

For today’s practice progress vid I’m playing the same lick 4xs in a row so you can get inside my “process”. By process I simply mean playing the same thing 4xs and ever so slightly varying the material here and there. By varying the material here and there I simply mean sometimes missing notes and sometimes not.
Other observations:
1) I think this is my fave lick of the piece bc it lays well and my ancient hands do ok with it
2) I’m wearing brown shoes today
3) I got a haircut thereby reducing total gray hair thereby becoming younger

Episode 2 of Holding Myself Accountable for Practicing (Almost) Everyday and Trying to Tie Longer Sections Together While Still Admittedly Hitting a Few Wrong Notes and Being Under Tempo and Also Still Being Old. Thanks for watching.
Haven’t had a super consistent practice routine in awhile but have put myself on a schedule in anticipation of two performances of Feast or Famine by @girlcomposer , first with @baylorperc alum @ztaylordavis ’ group at TWU and a few weeks after with the home team BPG at @baylormusic . Forcing myself into connecting passages and focusing on flow, even if not up to tempo (it’s not) and missing notes (I do miss them, believe it or not). Enjoying the consistency of three practice days of an hour to an hour and a half each and some substantive results this early in the process. I’ll keep posting progress as I build into these performances. Also, when did I turn old…the hair and the pants are both grayscale.
