When you first approach the topic, Compression is a big mystery, so over time teaching these classes I came up with this pet gnome analogy. It’s surprisingly accurate. In my classes I dive DEEP into how to use the many dynamics tools to enhance a sense of groove, and helping listeners stay focused on a particular element in your mix. Sign up for any of the 3 courses on my site, link in its usual place here. Here’s another section of my online classes where we go deep into all the Equalizer Filter types… this is a short snippet going over the most often used but least talked about - Pass Filters. These classes go into way more depth on type and use than I can share here, so check out the lynk in b1o for more info or to jump in! Gain structuring your recordings starts at the microphone preamp. Now that most people’s signal chains are just a single knob on a preamp, straight into the digital converter built into a usb interface, it’s become really important to set your gain properly from the start! If you only give yourself 3dB before clipping, chances are, at some point in your performance it’s going to crunch out! Even if you don’t clip the converters in doing so, it will clip in your mix as soon as you add any gain with EQ, or make up with a compressor, and you’ll have your mix faders way down to keep it balanced on the main outputs. I get a lot of files recorded at home that were clipped at the point of conversion, and had to be turned down to work with, and have that clipping crunch baked in. It’s an unfortunate and easily avoidable situation. With 24 bit encoding you can leave yourself huge headroom, and still be many times greater resolution than the old CD standard! I go over this in detail in my audio classes. Join on anytime. When you are recording a singer-songwriter who will be playing an acoustic guitar and also singing live, one of the biggest problems that can get in the way of a great recording, is too much cross-bleed of the vocal in the guitar mic, and vice versa. Using the polar patterns of figure 8 mics to reject this unwanted bleed is literally a magic trick. In this video to keep it short, I don’t go into why I’m setting things up with four microphones. But this is just so I can show the difference in sound texture/quality between a ribbon microphone element, and a tube large diaphragm condenser. Thanks to @austinfarrellmusic for the demo here! #soundengineer #musicproduction #audioengineer #recordingengineer #recordathome #

I have a large series of video classes available, one with nearly 30 hours of content. In the coming weeks, I’m going to be sharing short snippets from those classes that contains some useful information for everyone. This video is showing really quickly - the basics of how what we hear as pitch relates to sound frequencies we work with. I recently replaced my old headphones with a new design from @audeze_official , the CRBN electrostatic headphones. They’re made from what I think is a truly revolutionary carbon nanotube ultra-lightweight diaphragm material. They require special amplification to drive them at 580 Volts. They are the most transient, accurate, and unbelievably detailed headphone drivers I’ve ever experienced. From the AUDEZE website: “The CRBN driver includes a revolutionary ultra-thin diaphragm with carbon nanotubes suspended inside the material – unlike other electrostatic diaphragms, there is no coating. Because the charge is distributed throughout the film, this results in a uniform driving force that reduces distortion and improves clarity, resolution and transparency.” Not sponsored, just love these headphones! Video in slide three also from the AUDEZE website. #headphones #audiophile #audiogear #audioengineer #audioengineering #soundengineer #masteringengineer #mixingengineer #mixingandmastering #mixing #audiomixing #mastering #audiomastering #mixingstudio #masteringstudio #audeze #audezeheadphones #liquidmastering
